The
Kermit Davis Tr. Era
Officially Begins
By RICHARD TIJERINA

i urphy’s Law has descended onto
Kermit Davis Jr .’s world.
IT,
: V threatening to turn his 1990
I L— [ dream into a coaching
nightmare.
Davis, in his first year as Texas A&M men’s
basketball coach, has faced enough adversity in
his first eight months to last a lifetime:
• Forward David Peterson left the school
because of academic problems.
• Forward-center David Harris, the SWC
leader m blocked shots last year, also left A&M
because of academics.
• Two transfers — highly regarded Maurice
Sanders from Marshall ana Tommy French
from Hardin-Simmons ~~ ran into problems
over the summer and left school. Both would
have been eligible to play this year.
• Two Proposition 48 cases —Seagovdle
forward Ed Wheeler and San Antonio Lee
£_uard Artie Griffin — were lost. Wheeler left
A&M and now is at Paris junior College. Griffin
is sitting 1990 out, but should be in an Aggie
uniform next year.
• Guard Freddie Ricks, expected to be the
team's leader, was charged with breaking and
entei mg a car on the A&M campus and has
been suspended from the team. He may or may
not play basketball this year, depending on a
University investigation.
• Center Carlos Marrero, who saw limited
playing time last vear but was expected to
shoulder the load under the basket this season,
is out indefinitely with a knee injury.
The Aggies (14-17 in 1989, 7*9 in the
Southwest Conference) start their season
Saturday night. They host St. Petersburg AAU
Saturday night at G. Rollie White Coliseum.
Tipoff is at 8 p.m.
‘‘Sometimes when you’ve got the best players,
you might not be ready to play a game but
overall athletic ability just gets you through the
game,” Davis said. ‘"Here, it’s a fine line. We’ve
got to be able to go and execute the details
everyday, because if not we have a chance to gel
beat badly.”
A&M figures to get beaten more often than
not in 1990. Only two experienced players
return from last year's squad. Guards Lynn
Suber (14.0 point per game) and Brooks
Thompson (8.3) will have to provide leadership
to a young Aggie team made up mostly of junior
college transfers.
Suber is the lone senior on the team.
Tm really pleased with the job Lynn has
done on and of the floor with our newer
players,”Davis said. “He can be vocal leader. He

Kermit Davis Jr. arrived in College Station amidst a maelstrom of media questions and
team turbulence. Now he’s ready to bring his Texas A&M team into its season opener.
Sophomore guard Brooks Thompson will lead the 1990-91 Texas A&M men’s basketball
team. Thompson averaged 8.3 points a game as a shooting guard last year, and will be
come the point guard in first-year head coach Kermit Davis Jr.’s offensive attack.
