Lone senior on Aggie team strives for top
By SCOTT WUDEL
Of The Battalion Staff
Lynn Suber has played a lot of roles in
his career at A&M, but this season he could
face his biggest yet.
Suber is the only senior on this year’s
team, and the most acclaimed remnant left
of the Shelby Metcalf era. The 6-2 guard
will end his A&M career just as most of the
team is beginning the new era of Kermit
Davis.
Regardless, Suber knows he will bear a
lot of weight on his shoulders leading a
young team and eight new faces out onto
the court every night. But he remains opti
mistic about his role.
“I can’t really judge until the games
start,” Suber said. “But I consider myself a
role player, and whatever (coach) tells me to
do, and whatever I have to do in order for
us to win, I’ll do it.
“This is his first year, and he’s trying to
put the program together, and it’s going to
be a little struggle. But we’re willing to work
with him, and hopefully we can make this
year come out pretty good.”
Throughout his two-year stint as an Ag
gie, Suber has become one of the Southwest
Conference’s most feared scorers, with a ca
reer average of 12.4 points per game. He
has established himself as the top three-
point shooter in school history, owning 16
school records.
“Soob”, as he has been nicknamed, says
there will be no change in his shooting
plans.
“I’m going to try to keep my scoring up,”
he said. “And keep scoring in the scheme of
what we are doing.”
Suber says Davis’ up-tempo gameplan
suits his style well, and says the memories of
his former coach are behind him.
“I think that’s pretty much in the past,”
he explains. “We’ve looked over that, what’s
done is done, and we’re looking forward to
this year.”
But the senior says he cannot help but re
member a couple of the good times from
the past.
The first one that comes to mind, Suber
says, is last year’s game against Southern
Methodist in Dallas.
With time running out, Suber chased
down a loose ball in the corner of the court,
and threw back up a three-point shot with
less than a second left on the clock to beat
the Mustangs, 58-57.
The only memory that could top that, he
said, was a game against Connecticut in the
Great Alaska Shootout last year.
“That was my career game, it is the best
game I’ve had in my life,” he remembers
with a smile on his face.
Suber scored 33 points and hit 7 of 8
three-pointers in the season opener against
a team that would eventually end up in the
Final Four.
Suber is ready to get this season off the
ground and he’s excited about several
things in this year’s team.
He believes the Sixth Man tradition will
grow and become an integral part in draw
ing support for the Aggies and influence
the mood of A&M basketball.
“It might not be as big an issue now as it
will be probably two, three years from
now,” Suber said.
But what Suber said he is most proud of
is this team’s attitude.
“Every guy is positive towards the other,”
he said. “I wish I had a couple more years
under Coach Kermit Davis, but I’ll have to
make the best of my senior year.”
Whatever the role he plays, the list of
credits will certainly distinguish Suber as
one of the most accomplished players in
A&M’s history.
