Ad challenged Volvo pulls ‘monster truck’ ad after Mattox calls it misleading WRED Field of A&JV Dreams (contj f'5CU5E A1E, C0NDUCT1A/G SURVEY.. AUSTIN (AP) — Volvo Cars of North America pulled an advertise ment showing a Volvo withstanding attempts by a “monster truck” to crush it, after Texas Attorney Gen eral Jim Mattox challenged the ad as misleading. “Volvo was touted as a car that you can believe in,” Mattox said Monday. “Unfortunately, these ads, you could not believe in them.” William Hoover, senior vice presi dent of Volvo Cars of North Amer ica, said the company does not want to mislead the public and em phasized that Volvos are safe. “We agree that the consumers in the state of Texas, as well as consum ers throughout the country, deserve better advertising,” he said. But Hoover added, “The mistake was not with the claim that Volvos are safe cars, because there are nu merous independent studies that substantiate that Volvos are in fact among the safest, if not the absolute safest, cars on the road today.” Under an agreed court judgment, Volvo will not make claims about their vehicles that are not proven through evidence; will run correc tive newspaper ads in the form of a letter to consumers; and will pay the state $316,250 in investigative costs. Volvo admitted no fault and no le gal violations. In the ad, filmed in Austin in June, a Volvo appears to be the only car left standing after being run over by a large-tire pickup. The ad is a dramatization of a 1988 Vermont event, according to the company. reinforced with steel or wood. Hoover said Volvo did not km the cars were modified until the attorney general. The modifnj lions were made to ensure thero safety and to allow the Volvo ton stand the number of runs r by the truck in filming, accoi the company. However, the ad is not billed as a dramatization. And Mattox said the other cars in the ad were weakened structurally, while the Volvos were Some of the shots of the “ Foot” running over the Volvos may have been fabricated, Ma said.
