One notable exception to this was her extraordinary encore of Patsy Cline’s “Sweet Dreams,” the final song performed a cappella. The en core period was surprisingly abrupt (a matter of seconds), and the lone “Sweet Dreams” was an unusually quick capper. Even so, the end result was an emotional finish that cap tured McEntire’s amazing vocal range and control. Again, I was surprised by the brevity of both the performance, and especially the encore, which seemed somewhat curt. But, McEn- tire is a talented singer unquestio nably in command of her voice and her audience. I also commend her for her movement toward a broader, adult-contemporary audience, in jecting rhythm and blues, rock, and folk into her closely-related country roots. Stagewise, some of the choreo graphed steps, especially those in volving her supporting singers, need to be canned. Reba is certainly no Janet Jackson when it comes to movement. The steps that allowed her to strut and interact with audi ence members (which she does very nicely) are much more suited to what appears a naturally spontaneous and pleasant personality. But, then country artists usually tend to be legitimately more respon sive and sincere than their rock counterparts. So, maybe nice guys (and gals) don’t always finish last. VOTE FOR AN AGGIE MOM.
