information
on thefts
Brazos County Crime Stoppers is
seeking information about two thefts
at the Wilson Cattle Company on
Old San Antonio Road.
Eight Dunlop retread truck tires
were stolen July 30 after thieves cut
the lock and chain which secured

Aug. 15 when thieves stole a

and a saddle.
The stolen items are estimated to
be worth more than $ 1,700.
Brazos County Sheriff’s
investigators believe the same
person(s) was involved with both
thefts.
Investigators also believe the
thieves might attempt to trade or sell
the items locally.
The air compressor is marked
with serial number 112989L-
067670.
The Brazos County Sheriffs
Department and Crime Stoppers
need help in identifying the
person(s) responsible for the thefts.
If you have information that

call, Crime Stoppers will assign you a
coded number to protect your
identity.
If your call leads to an arrest and
f rand jury indictment, Crime
toppers will pay you up to $ 1,000 in
cash. Crime Stoppers also pays cash
for information on any felony crime
or the location of a wanted fugitive.
Protesters
form chain
in Austin
AUSTIN (AP) —Anti
abortion protesters stood in a
“Life Chain” along a 13-mile
stretch of road in Austin Sunday
in an hour-long demonstration
organized by churches.
Edna Staudt of the “Life
Chain” committee said about
8,500 people participated in the
event, which coincided with
Respect Life Sunday, an annual
Catholic church celebration.
The protesters held signs
saying, “Abortion Kills Children.”
The Life Chain was not
continuous. People stood
shoulder-to-shoulder in some
stretches and few to a block in
others.
“What you have here today is a
peaceful crosscut representing
American society, stating a simple
fact that when abortion occurs
there is no life,” Chris Brammer
said. He and his family drove
from Elroy to participate in the
protest.
During the hour, people drove
by honking, waving and flashing
thumbs-up signs.
A few blocks away, some men
and women protested the event,
shouting their views through a
megaphone. People honked and
shouted “pro-choice” to show
their support of them.
“I wish they’d keep their Bibles
out of our Legislature,” Mary
Cline of Austin said.

Leader of Arab ethnic group says
threats aimed at American-Arabs
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Threats,
racist acts and occasional beatings
have been aimed at people of Arab
descent since Iraq invaded Kuwait,
says the leader of an Arab ethnic
group.
“We’ve been misconstrued and
subjected to bad propaganda,” said
Mohsen Jouini, president of the
American-Arab Anti-Discrimination
Committee chapter in San Antonio.
“There’s been a wall of misunder
standing,”
Jouini, a native of Tunisia, told
the San Antonio Express-News in
yesterday’s editions of three inci
dents in which he said Arab-Ameri-
cans here were harassed:
• Seven people at a flea market
were arrested and kept in handcuffs
for four hours. Jouini said a detec
tive paced in front of them while
they were questioned and threat
ened them if they did not tell the
truth.
• An argument about Iraqi Presi
dent Saddam Hussein at a nightclub
turned into an Arab against non-
Arab fight, and the manager or
dered “all Arabs” to leave, Jouini
said. The club is frequented by Arab
"IVe Ve been

— Mohsen Jouini,
American-Arab Anti-
Discrimination Committee
college students living in San Anto
nio.
• An Arab student arguing with a
girl was beaten after someone heard
his accent and asked his nationality,
and the student said he was Arab.
About 3,000 people of Arab de
scent live in San Antonio, said
Jouini, a service representative for
Southwestern Bell Telephone Co.
He pointed out that not all Arabs
support Hussein’s Aug. 2 invasion of
Kuwait.
“On the day of the invasion, our
group and others were in front of
City Hall protesting the invasion,”
he said.
Jouini described other recentino
dents in which Arabs or Arab-Ame?
icans have been targets of racist lx
havior.
He said a flier being posted atoi
near some local businesses sail
“WAR!!! The Arabs are ready
Americans. Don’t support businessti
owned by Arabs.”
The poster states that a particulu
business is owned by Arabs
urges the public not to spend mote!
there.
“Someone threw ketchup on
car because I had a sticker that said
‘Proud to be A rah-American.’Some
one later threw an egg at my car,”
said.
One of his children, Atka, 16,
high school senior, and a foreign6
change student living with them
Naela Mohieldin, 16, of Egypt,
senior, have been subjected to racis
remarks at school, Jouini said.
Jouini urged that racism l<
stopped. “Please understandourp
sition and don’t subject us to
types of things,” he said.
