Make-A-Wish gifts stolen from recipient PLAINVIEW (AP) — It was like Christmas in September for Leah Rushing. That’s until someone stole all the gifts given to the fifth grader by the Make-A-Wish Foundation while she was undergoing chemotherapy to combat an abdominal tumor. The gifts, a new bicycle, clothes, videocassette recorder, color TV, cassette tapes and Nintendo games, disappeared from the Rushings’ home here Sept. 28 during Leah’s chemotherapy. The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants special requests to children with severe illnesses. “This burglary ... brought me down,” Martha Rushing, Leah’s mother, said. “I feel soyry for (the burglars). If they have a conscience, they should feel bad. But, on the other hand, it could’ve been worse. More could’ve been taken or we could’ve been injured.” The burglars had the heist well planned, Rushing said. “They know of Leah’s plight and they know what stuff is here,” she said. “Plainview is not that big of a place. What’s really bad is that who ever it was had to know of the cir cumstances — that I was here a lot and that the Make-A-Wish people had visited. They also had to know me.” Leah said she was upset about the theft. But she was relieved her mother wasn’t hurt. Two weeks before the theft, Leah was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a r^re form of cancer affecting the autonomic nervous system in young children.
