The Crime Prevention Unit of
Texas A&M’s University Police
Department wants students, fac

driver when you ride your bike in
traffic.
Learn and obey these bicycle
laws:
» Obey all traffic signs and sig
nals.
• Warn other traffic by using
hand signals when stopping or
turning.
• Always ride as near to the
right side of the road as possible
and in the same direction as mo
tor vehicles.
• Be careful when passing
parked vehicles or vehicles travel-
ingin the same direction.
• Not more than two bicycles
should be driven side by side.
• Ride only upon the bicycle’s
regular seat.
• Do not carry packages that
will prevent keeping at least one
hand on handlebars.
State law requires every bicycle
have working brakes. When used
at night, bikes must have white
lights on the front and a red tail
light which can be seen at 500
feet. Bikes also must have a red
reflector visible for 300 feet.
Breaking any state bike or traf
fic law could lead to a citation
with fines amounting to $217.50.
Register your bike with either
UPD, the Department of Parking,
Transit and Traffic Services, or
the College Station or Bryan po
lice departments.
Record your bike’s serial num
ber, and secure it with a case-
hardened steel lock.
Schools trade
ideas at SFA

Texas A&M’s Residence Hall As
sociation members will “set up hou
se” in Nacogdoches for a weekend in
November while attending a univer
sity Residence Hall Conference.
Jean Laird, A&M student and
RHA national communication coor
dinator, will represent A&M during
the South West Affiliate of College
and University Residence Hall con
ference at Stephen F. Austin Univer
sity.
“Basically, the SWACURH con
ference keeps the schools in touch
where they can discuss and ex
change ideas,” Laird says.
Universities from Arkansas, Loui
siana, Texas and Oklahoma also will
attend the conference.
Laird says several different uni
versities have contacted A&M to ask
how a conservative school passed a
24-hour visitation proposal and will
seek information from A&M about
the policy at the conference.
Laird says RHA wants more stu
dent involvement. If more members
become involved, RHA could better
serve A&M residents, she says.
Laird presently is trying to find
out the conference dates, which fall
on school days. The absences will be
University excused.
A deadline will be set for those in
terested in attending, but there is no
limit on how many students go.
Conference registration will be in
the A2 lounge between Hughes and
Moses halls on the north side of cam
pus.
For further information, call the
RHA office at 845-3051.
