Leaders hope cooperation, federal aid will curb gangs SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Author ities are hoping a newly organized unit to track, monitor and identify youth gangs will help curb the proli feration of such groups and the ac companying violence. Police have received a $148,000 federal grant to fund a three-man gang unit that will officially start op erations Monday. One of the unit’s main responsibilities will be monitor ing a dozen or so of the city’s more violent gangs. Police Chief William O. Gibson said officers have been confronting youth gangs for the last 50 years. But police tactics are changing as the reasons for gang membership and gang methods vary, he said. Civic leaders have vowed that po lice, parents, educators, neighbors and clergy will work together in the 1990s to keep youth gang violence in San Antonio from reaching the lev els in some other major cities. “I certainly believe (the police-led effort) will head it off,” Gibson said. “I think ... we’re much better in formed than (police) departments were 10 or 15 years ago.” Last 2 Weeks-Enrolling Now!!
