County Commissioner John Wiley Price, issuing a “call to arms,” warned Wednesday that violence would result if the city hires a “good old boy” police chief who is insensi tive to minorities. Price, who was criticized for his remarks by other Dallas County Commissioners Court members and “I don’t want anyone to take what I say and take it to the streets. At this particular time, taking it to the streets is inappropria te behavior.” — John Wiley Price, Dallas county commissioner Zan Holmes Jr. of the Greater Dallas Community. “We all want to live and move around in safety. But we need to remember that peace is not the absence of tension. “There can be no peace in our community or our world without justice,” he said. “Genuine peace re quires that we address the underly ing causes of pain that breeds frus tration and conflict.” The three groups and two others then met with reporters to discuss Price’s controversial remarks. After its meeting Thursday, the group voted to send Mayor Annette Strauss a letter urging the city to take special care in hiring a new po lice chief who will be acceptable to all residents, and adding the issue should take top priority. At his own news conference, Price had said his statements quoted by The Dallas Morning News were “ir responsible” and may have been “in flammatory.” city officials, later backed away from some of his statements but refused to apologize for them. Members of the 315-member Greater Dallas Community of Churches joined the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the Dallas Peace Center in con demning any violence that might re sult from unrest. “We all want peace,” said the Rev. “1 don’t want anyone to take what I say and take it to the streets,” he said. “At this particular time, taking it to the streets is inappropriate be havior.” Price later said he would advocate violence against police only in the event of officers’ violence against ci vilians. “If you try to bring in a good old boy in this system, we’re going to be in the streets. Physically, literally, shooting folks. We’re not going to tolerate it,” the commissioner said in Wednesday’s article. Environmental thieves notice! by candidate AUSTIN (AP) — Polluters are killers who should go to prison, Democratic attorney general can-1 didate Dan Morales said Thurs ! day as he announced a hearing on proposals to punish environ mental lawbreakers. “They are killing our land They are killing our wildlife They are killing our future,”said Morales, a state legislator froii San Antonio. “These offenses must be recog nized for what they are-—violent, deliberate and callous attacks on our very existence.” Morales said the House Crinii nal Jurisprudence Committee which he heads, would meet Oct 3 to consider the creation of crim inal penalties for environmental offenses. The proposals includt prison terms for corporate offi dais and others convicted of suck offenses. Currently, Texas’ main method of punishing those who break environmental laws is through civil fines, he said. “It has become painfully clear in recent months and years thai environmental offenders view the payment of these civil finds asa routine cost of doing business. We must not allow polluters to ‘buy’ the right to contaminate the only environment we will ever have,” Morales said. Imprisoning polluters would not burden the prison system be cause not that many people would l>e subject to incarceration, he said. Searching For The Opportunity Oasis?
