Slain trooper
remembered
as valorous
Nerd House by Tom A. Madison
WEBSTKR (Al’) — Nearly I,()()()
mourners, including hundreds of
police officers, crammed into a
Houston-area church T hursday to
pay final respects to slain rookie De
partment of Public Safety Officer
Mark Phebus.
Phebus, 23, was gunned down
early Monday in Montgomery
County when he stopped at what lie
believed was a traffic accident but
really w as a domestic disturbance.
A 43-year-old Spring man, Rich
ard l.eland Jordan, is charged with
capital murder and remains at large.
Several hundred T exas troopers
were joined by of ficers from as far
away as die Dallas area and Loui
siana for services at the NASA
Church of the Nazarene in suburban
Houston.
Phebus’ casket was draped with a
T exas flag and flanked by an honor
guard of troopers. Mourners attend
ing Thursday's service walked
through a line of state troopers that
bordered the road leading into die
church.
“T he senseless and tragic way lie
died is beyond our understanding,”
Wayne Hicks, pastor of the church,
told mourners. “It just doesn’t make
sense.”
Hicks said Phebus had been
taught Christian values at home and
wanted his life to mean something.
“He chose to live a life of serving
others,” he said, noting that if Plie-
bus had not stopped at the rural
Montgomery County scene early
Monday, Jordan’s wife might have
been killed.
“Mark’s life was not dedicated to
the safe way,” he said. “Mark died a
man of honor and valor. I prav his
spirit will live on wit h all of ns."
, . . AIUD THEN YOU TELL THE BULLY , LISTEN , PUKE-FACE,
J'n> NOT COINS TO TAKE THIS CRAP ANYMORE,
A longtime friend, Beverly Stan
ton, who attended Southern Naza
rene University in Bethany, Okla.,
with him, remembered Phebus as al
ways friendly and willing to lend a
hand.
“He was a good and wonderful
man with a lot of heart,” she said.
At the service, she read a letter
from a motorist identified as Bobby
Presley, who had received a ticket
from Phebus on April 24 but felt
compelled to write to Phebus’ supe
riors about the trooper’s conduct.
“Mr. Phebus treated me with
courtesy and respect,” the motorist
wrote.
Phebus was off-duty and return
ing from College Station when he
saw a ditched car and stopped to
help. After approaching the couple,
he was shot in the face.
Authorities said Jordan allegedly
had chased his estranged wife, Janet,
from a bar in Pinehurst where the
couple had an argument.
The woman, who has been help
ing police, said her husband was
drunk and had vowed to kill some
one before the night was over.
