Monday recommending the admin
istration update the system to make
deposits more rapidly for faculty.
“There is a lot of variation in the
amount of time checks are received
each month,” Storey says. “The reso
lution is centered around the fact
that the computer system is not ad
equate to take care of it.”
The resolution must be approved
by the Senate’s Executive Committee
later this month before it is placed
on October’s agenda for discussion.
Storey says it would be ideal if the
administration upgraded the system
to transfer the deposits by computer,
like the University of Texas’ system,
instead of mailing them.
“The (A&M) payroll office is anti
quated,” Zucker says. “A&M is a
first-class institution and it’s hard to
believe the administration couldn’t
fix this problem if (it) wanted to.”
Zucker says the Texas Faculty As
sociation is hoping increased aware
ness among the A&M faculty will
push the administration to improve
the procedures.
“It’s time for A&M to bring the
payroll office into the 21st century,”
he says.
But Taylor says there are no plans
to change the present policy of mail
ing checks to insurance companies,
and he is not in favor of implement
ing an electronic system to deposit
money by computer.
“I think there’s a cheaper way to
do it,” he says. “The cost of imple
menting that would be negligible to
the University.”

and probably is cost competitive with
oil now if the cost of oil spills, explo
sions and other factors are figured
in.
Worsham, who pledges not to
make any “no tax” promises, said he
supports a broad tax on energy
sources to further spur conserva
tion.
“I support a broad energy tax
rather than just a tax on gasoline,”
he said.
Worsham also said he would be in
favor of a national recycling pro
gram to reuse glass, aluminum, plas
tic and other materials.
When asked if the “Earth vote” is
enough to get him elected in No
vember, he said he was unsure.
“If this was New Jersey, it might
be,” Worsham said. “But around
here, I don’t know. If people knew
what was going on, it should be
enough.”
Worsham said his campaign
against Barton and Welch has been
mainly an informative one so far,
but he hopes for more before elec
tions.
“It’s been informative up to now,
but hopefully, it will get competitive
soon,” he said.
Worsham spoke to students in
Bob Slovak’s and Zandy Pustay’s
government classes.
The students already are active in
the political and environmental
scene. As part of the course, stu
dents must volunteer with a local
candidate.
Two local political candidates, Jim
James and Steve Ogden, spoke to
the classes earlier this semester.
