Lady Aggies facing tough Beaumont trip By SCOTT WUDEL Of The Battalion Staff The Texas A&M volleyball team will continue its long list of road games tonight in Beaumont. Lamar University are the fourth of eight opponents the Lady Aggies will face in almost two weeks of consecutive road games. A&M will play the Lady Cardi nals at 7:00 p.m. on the Lamar campus. The 2-6 Lady Aggies are looking for their first road victory of the season after coming off losses to Nebraska, Wyoming and Purdue in last weekend’s Ne braska Classic. A&M coach A1 Givens said the road has been tough for the team, but the players did not get disap pointed after playing the level of competition they have. “Life, volleyball, whatever ... everything is a learning process,” Givens said. “The trials and trib ulations help prepare you for the other obstacles that you are going to encounter. “We went up to Nebraska and got the chance to play some real (juality teams and we really be lieve that’s going to help prepare us for the conference.” Givens says if the Lady Aggies can go 2-2 on their upcoming road trip that the team will be back on the track where they need to be. A&M travels to Baton Rouge, La., this weekend to compete against Penn State, Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, and Louisiana State in the Tiger Classic. Givens says the team had two good days of practice here in pre paration for the Lamar match and feels good about some of the things that are taking place. The 9-5 Lady Cardinals have won eight of their last nine con tests after losing three of their first four of the season. Lamar returns a team that went 24-16 last year— picking up one of its losses against the Lady Aggies in College Station. Givens said that beating a team that’s playing well like Lamar will give the Lady Aggies momentum heading into the tournament in Louisiana. Givens said he would like to see the team increase the chemistry and consistency that it found in the match Tuesday against Southwest Texas State. A&M de feated the Lady Bobcats in four games, 15-3, 17-19, 15-10, 15-5. “We’re trying to get a group that’s going to jell and mend toge ther,” Givens said after the vic tory. “I wanted to stay with a group without making a lot of wholesale changes.” The starting lineup will stay in tact for tonight’s game. Wudel Continued from page 9 the three or four times we yelled, “Rah, rah, rah, team!” 6. The heat: Intolerable and un controllable. It was like standing in the Dixie Chicken on a packed night in the heat of the summer. Needless to say, I did not enjoy the bowls of perspiration gushing profusely from my forehead. It was one of the few times I would have appreciated the luxury of a Kyle Dome. 5. The couple lip-locking in front of me: I believe in the best of tradi- tions but hey! ... when the other team is faced with third and long on the next series, it’s pijpbably time to take a breather. Glad they didn’t choke on each other’s Big Red chew ing gum. 4. The over-excited fan with the southern drawl: “Let’s score 91 ... for the class of ‘91 ... whoooop!,” he barked out in the third quarter of the game. The same logic that would say, “Let’s drop an atomic bomb on Iraq tomorrow and end the whole problem!” 3. The future: Knowing next week’s game against North Texas could be a bigger drubbing than this one. 2. Infinite wisdom: T he bleacher quarterbacks standing behind you whose knowledge of the game far exceeds that of the coaches or any one else in the immediate environ ment. “Ahh ... yeah ... I could have told you that would be a good time to call that play-action fake to the fullback and have the quarterback hide the ball behind his back until he has fooled the safety, and the re ceiver is running all by himself on a fly route toward the end zone.” And finally ... the No. 1 complaint about The A&M-Southwestern Louisiana game ... 1. Shyness/Stupidity: Call it what you want. Taking an attractive but innocent freshman to the game and being too shy to explain to her what * the tradition of, “When one Aggie scores, all Aggies score” means. It'is possible for a 21-year-old to be bash ful. So there it is, snide but unfortu nately true. Maybe these things didn’t happen to you, but over the course of the season they inevitably will make their unwelcome appear ance. Football games are a lot of fun and should be looked forward to. Maybe I just had a bad day ... yeah, I think I did. Hope next Saturday is a good one for you. nd jght ^ "NEW AND USED CD S •FORMERLY DIGITAL AUDIO EXCHANGE $150 $150 $150 $150 $150 $150 $150 $150 $150 $150 $150 $150 $150 siso Athlete’s Foot Study $ 1 so Lcn Individuals to participate in an investigational drug research $ 1 50 $150 $150 study.
