HOUSTON

running back
Chuck Weath-
erspoon is free
on $500 bail af-
ter he was
charged with
misdemeanor
assault in con
nection with the
weekend assault
of another stu
dent.
Richard Labs, 33, said he was at
tacked “out of the blue” and suf
fered a black eye.
“I don’t know what provoked
Weatherspoon
him,” Labs said.
Weatherspoon, 22, a senior, faces
a Friday court appearance.
Weatherspoon, who set an NCAA
rushing record last season by averag
ing 9.6 yards per carry, was accused
of being involved in an incident Sat
urday night at an apartment com
plex at the school. He was jailed, but
was released after posting bail on
Sunday.
“We received a report that one of
our football players was involved in
an assault,” school spokesman Eric
Miller said. “We don’t know why
Weatherspoon and the other gen
tleman got into words, but they did.
I have no details about who did what
to whom.”
Dykes looking forward
to game at New Mexico
LUBBOCK (AP) — Texas Tech
coach Spike Dykes knew there was a
good chance his team would be 0-2
after opening against nationally-
ranked Ohio State and Houston.
But that doesn’t make it any easier
to accept.
“Losing is horrible and it takes a
lot out of ya,” Dykes said Monday.
“We knew there was a chance we
would be where we are. But the last
thing we can do right now is start
worrying about being 0-2. We have
got a lot of tough teams ahead of
us.”
The Red Raiders hope to rebound
Saturday at New Mexico after a 17-
10 opening loss to No. 16 Ohio State
and a 51-35 pounding by No. 14
Houston.
“We signed up for 11 football
games,” Dykes said. “There are two
gone and nine left and I don’t think
we have got anyone that is going to
quit. I don’t have a white flag and I
don’t think our team does.”
Dykes said it will be “fun
team that is not nationally rankec
But he added New Mexico (1-2) will
be ready for Tech.
“The Lobos always are a very dif
ficult team for us,” Dykes said. “It
will be their homecoming so you
know they will be wired up. We were
very fortunate to beat them a year
ago.”
Tech rallied late in the fourth
quarter last year to edge New Mexico
27-20. The defense preserved the
victory with a goal-line stand with
less than two minutes to play.
“We had all we could bargain for
and then some,” Dykes said. “They
are a lot better than they were a year
ago. They will be better than they
have ever been Saturday. I will guar
antee you that.”
Dykes said the Raiders have made
progress despite losing their first
two games.
Tagliabue warns
Glanville of fire
PITTSBURGH (AP) — NFL
commissioner Paul Tagliabue has
warned Atlanta Falcons coach
Jerry Glanville that he will be
fined if he continues criticizing
opposing coaches.
Glanville, the former Houston
coach, called Oilers coach Jack
Pardee “a total jerk” after the Fal
cons’ 47-27 victory over Houston
on Sept. 9. He also made a flip
pant remark to a group of Texas
sports writers after declining to
answer their questions.
"I sent (Glanville) a letter warn
ing him,” said Tagliabue, who at
tended the Steelers-Oilers game
Suntlay night. “I reminded him
that at the league meetings in
March, the competition commit
tee, as well as the 28 clubs, told
me to crack down on what they
believed was unsportsmanlike,
uncalled for, flip comments by
coaches.
“And so I sent him a reminder
and made it clear if it happens
again, he’s going to be fined. And
not just Jerry Glanville ... (it’s) any
coach in the league who makes
statements like that.” i
Tagliabue said the “jerk” crack
prompted him to write Glanville.
“Last year, we had coaches call
ing other coaches names and we
had coaches criticizing fans, in
the case of Cincinnati and Cleve
land,” he said. “The competition
committee ... really came down
strong on that at the league meet
ings, and I’m going to come down
strong this season.
Tagliabue said he knew of
Cleveland defensive tackle Mi
chael Dean Perry’s remarks that a
couple of roughing the passer pe
nalties were worth taking to pun
ish Steelers quarterback Bubby
Brister.

And I’m expected to think people
read the sports section when I’ve
gotten no response save this one
group of guys that calls up and
complains that I’ve run more
Cowboys stories than Oilers stories
and then adds that we’re idiots.
Fine. I’ve tried to run more Oilers
stories, so that problem is solved.
But we’ve still got the rest of you
who think I didn’t sit at Kyle Field
Saturday night watching the game
and feel this is the time to call me to
let me know you’re proofreading the
pages.
When I’m here at 2 a.m. laying
out a page so you can read our

looks just like 63-14. And if it gets
past whomever wrote the headline,
me and everyone else who glances at
the page before it goes to print, then
that’s the way it gets printed.
