GRAPEVINE (AP) — A 21-year-
old Jordanian man and a Dallas pe
troleum engineer who made a dar
ing escape from Iraqi-occupied Ku
wait are making sure they keep in
touch in the Lone Star State.
The Jordanian, named Nizar, and
oilman Jimmie Hawkins were re
united Sunday at Dallas-Fort Worth
International Airport. Nizar got a
visitor’s visa with the help of Hawk
ins, who raised nearly $4,000 for the
man’s plane ticket.
“God, it’s good to see you,” Hawk
ins said as the two embraced.
Nizar buried his head in the
Texas man’s shoulder in an emo
tional reunion.
“Don’t worry,” Hawkins said. “I’ll
take care of you.”
Hawkins’ wife, Suzanne, carried a
red, white and blue sign that said,
“Welcome Nizar.”
“Thank you very much,” she said
as she hugged Nizar.
“It is a small world, and we all
have to take a stand,” Nizar said.
“We should all do it.”
The two men used secrecy, hiding
places, falsified documents and brib
ery in their escape from Kuwait,
where Hawkins had been working.
Hawkins said Nizar came to him
and volunteered to help him while
he was hiding from Iraqi soldiers af
ter the Aug. 2 invasion of Kuwait.
“He knocked on my door and
said, ‘You are a friend of my friends,
and I have a responsibility to help
you,”’ Hawkins recalled.
At first, Hawkins said he didn’t
trust Nizar because he didn’t know
him. “But then I had to,” he added.
When the two finally made their
escape, Nizar had Hawkins dress as
an Arab and told him to act deaf and
mute. The two set out for Jordan us
ing forged licenses and car registra
tion.

Race for dog track
out of starting blocks
AUSTIN (AP) — The hotly-con-
tested race for a Galveston County
greyhound track began anew Mon
day with last year’s winner and then
loser saying the new hearing was ille
gal.
“The most objectionable part of
this whole thing is that the commis
sion is undertaking a whole series of
what we view to be illegal, useless
and essentially null and void pro
ceedings,” said Tim Herman, an at
torney for Lone Star Greyhound
Park.
The Texas Racing Commission
awarded the pari-mutuel wagering
license to Lone Star in July, 1989,
but the losing applicants won in
court and had the case sent back to
the commission which decided last
May to start over.
During the initial fight for the lu
crative Galveston County license, at
torneys for the losing applicants
ok '
complained the commission did not
have access to all information when
it awarded the license to Lone Star.
MAGNOLIA (AP) — Authorities in southeast
Texas hunted Monday for a Spring man accused
of fatally shooting an off-duty state trooper, who
happened onto a domestic dispute he thought
was an auto collision.
Jeffrey Phebus, 23, a rookie with the Texas
Department of Public Safety, had been out of
town for the weekend and was returning home
when he came upon two cars bumping each
other on Farm Road 1774 in Montgomery
County, DPS spokesman Mike Cox said.
One of the cars was run off the road and when
the trooper stopped to assist, he was shot, Cox
said.
The battle also was marked by
controversy when an employee of
Lone Star allegedly placed a dead
bird on an opponent’s proposed site
to make it appear the area was the
nesting ground for the endangered
Attwater’s prairie chicken.
Since initially winning the license,
Lone Star and its Alabama investors
have been followed by controversy at
tracks in Kansas and Wisconsin.
In Wisconsin, the investors sold
their interest in a Kenosha dog track
after allegations of deception and
fraud. Elliot Maisel of Mobile, Ala.,
president of Lone Star, also faces
charges of assaulting the chairman

Man sought for murder of DPS rookie trooper
A capital murder arrest warrant from Mont
gomery County named Richard Leland Jordan,
43, in the slaying, which occurred about 1:15
a.m. south of Hazy Hollow, between Magnolia
and Pinehurst.
DPS Cpl. Robert Moore said Phebus was in his
personal car and did not have a radio.
“He asked someone to call a 911 number,”
Moore said. “The wife (Jordan’s wife), I believe,
left to go to the phone and dial 911.”
While she was gone, Phebus was shot in the
face with what authorities believe was a large-cali
ber handgun.
Jordan’s wife, Janet, is assisting police in the
investigation, Cox said.
Jordan was described as white, about 6 feet 1
inch tall, with brown hair and a mustache. He
was last seen wearing a ball cap, green striped
shirt and blue jeans. He drove away from the
shooting in a black 1976 Chevrolet Caprice Clas
sic.
Authorities initially concentrated their search
in the Sealy area, where Jordan works, but later
were investigating areas in Houston, DPS spokes
man David Wells said.
“We don’t want him to know exactly where
we’re looking,” Wells said.
Jordan was believed to be armed with a pistol.
