Vela-O’Conner) and Margherita (Lanell Pena) fumble witfi the stolen groceries. (Above) Margherita listens as Antonia pleads her case. By CAROL GLENN The Theatre Arts Department at Texas A&M University would like to say thanks to Lincoln Savings and Loan, Shell Oil Company, Coca-Cola Bottling Company, Governor Bill Clements, President Bush, the United States Congress, TAMU Parking Services, Sadam Hussein, Gulf States Utilities, and many oth ers. Without these people, there would be a decrease in inflation and hence no need for their production of “Non Si Paga! Non Si Paga!” (We Won't Pay! We Won’t Pay!). “Non Si Paga! Non Si Paga!” is a political farce written by Dario Fo (with an American Version by R.G. Davis and the Company), directed by Mary Ellen Brennan and Michael L. Greenwald, and brought vividly to life by an A&M group of talented theater arts students. The play begins with Fulvio Bardi (Jonathan Burke) explaining the turmoil a depression is having on the people in Italy. Inflation has hit the grocery stores, the labor unions are fed-up with their low wages and the citizens are basically unhappy with the communist party. The citizens revolt and seek re venge by stealing groceries and threatening labor union strikes. They refuse to continue being the victims of the depression. - The setting is Milano, Italy, at the home of Giovanni (Al Alford) and Antonia (Christie Vela-O’Connor). The action begins with a dispute between Antonia and her friend Margherita (Lanell Pena) over gro ceries that Antonia has stolen from the local market. At first Margherita refuses to help Antonia hide the goods, but she gives in after some persuasion. Antonia fears Giovanni will find the stolen groceries and scold her se verely. Giovanni is a proud man and would never steal food or eat stolen food. As the play unwinds inflation and the depression begin to erode the stringent morals and scruples on which Giovanni has based his whole life. I was amazed at the talented ac tors and actresses of the Aggie Play ers. Vela-O’Connor’s portrayal of Antonia was riveting and believable. Burke's overwhelming energy and charisma brought this play to life through his outstanding portrayal of five characters. It’s a shame, though, that Theater Arts 101 and 280 students, who more or less have to be there to re ceive lab credit for their classes, made up the majority of the audi ence. Non-theater arts majors are overlooking an entertainment gold mine. I must admit that I’m as entertain' mem-bigoted as they come, sincel had never been to an Aggie Players production in the four years 1'vt been here. 1 had no idea what 1 was missing. The Aggie Players are probably one of the best-kept secreis on campus. It’s obvious that everyone in volved in this production put an ini mense amount of effort into making this a truly memorable performance ‘Non Si Paga! Non Si Paga!" con tinues Tuesday through Saturday^ 8 p.m. with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sal- urday in the Fallout Theater (Room 144 Blocker).
