SWC must
prove worthy
of A&M, UT
If the Southwest
Conference hopes to remain a
Viable entity that will include
both Texas and Texas A&M, it
will have to endear itself to the
major television networks.
To do this, other SWC teams
will need to prove themselves
worthy during non-conference
games involving top Division I
teams.
It’s obvious that for the SWC
to survive, A&M and UT must
remain. If not, the conference
will become nothing more than an
equivalent to the Southland
Conference in terms of national
appeal.
This summer was filled with
talk of the “Big Two” (A&M and
UT) following Arkansas’ lead
and leaving the conference to find
more television revenue.
Never mind tradition and
loyalty, big bucks are the name of
the game in college football these
days. Obviously, the Big Two’s
presidents don’t want to be left
out of the money pool.
A&M president William H.
Mobley and UT president
William H. Cunningham looked
from coast to coast trying to find
a v/aWe conference to join.
However, they couldn’t locate a

SWC basketball coaches:
Take Hogs’ eligibility away
FORT WORTH (AP) — The
Southwest Conference’s basketball
coaches say there’s a way to keep de
fecting Arkansas from winning its
third consecutive basketball
championship: If you can’t beat ’em,
ban ’em.
Arkansas will be a member of the
SWC until June 1 of next year, mak
ing it eligible for all the league’s
championships before the Razor-
backs leave for the Southeastern
Conference.
But five of the eight remaining
basketball coaches surveyed by the
Fort Worth Star-Telegram say the
Razorbacks’ final season in the SWC
shouldn’t count.
“I’m disappointed that they would
feel that way, but everybody’s got to
have their feelings,” Arkansas’ coach
Nolan Richardson said Tuesday.
“If that’s a majority of them that
feel that way, then I’m very sorry
about their feelings.”
TCU’s Moe Iba, Baylor’s Gene
Iba, Rice’s Scott Thompson, Texas
Tech’s Gerald Myers and Texas
coach Tom Penders didn’t think Ar
kansas should be eligible for SWC
basketball honors.
SMU’s John Shumate said he had
“mixed emotions” and didn’t cast a
vote. Texas A&M’s Kermit Davis Jr.
said he had no problem with Arkan^
“What’s important is
we are a member. As
long as I’m a member I
will conduct myself
accordingly. ”
— Tom Penders,
UT basketball coach
sas being eligible, and Houston’s Pat
Foster had no comment on the ques
tion.
“What’s important is we are a
member,” Penders said. “As long as
I’m a member I will conduct myself
accordingly.
“I can’t imagine Syracuse leaving
the Big East and being allowed to
participate,” said Penders, whose
team has finished second and third
to the Razorbacks in the last two sea
sons.
“Yeah, it would make it easier for
us,” he said. “Basically, Arkansas
thumbed their nose at all of us.
“I think it’s going to be an ong
oing story all year,” Penders said.
“But the reality is that Arkansas
brings in a lot of people.
Myers agreed, saying, “When a
team withdraws, it should automat
ically lose all its privileges. One of
those privileges is representing that
conference.”
Thompson said there’s a “general
tendency” to feel that Arkansas has
left the conference,“and it’s a lame-
duck season.”
Three-quarters of the league’s
members would have to vote to
make Arkansas ineligible for the
regular- and post-season basketball
championships.
Smith signs $5 million
four-year contract
D/VL.L.A$
ADDISON (AP) — Running
back Emmitt Smith, ending the
longest rookie holdout in the his
tory of the Dallas Cowboys at 48
days, signed a
four-year con
tract on Tuesday
worth an esti
mated package of
$5 million.
Smith, the 17th
player selected in COWBOYS
the draft, said
“I’m no savior for this franchise.
It takes 11 guys. But it’s an unique
opportunity to grow together
with a team. We hope to be in the
Super Bowl in the next two or
three years.”
Owmer Jerry Jones and Smith,
who set 58 records at the Univer
sity of Florida, wouldn’t disclose
the details. However, both com
promised. Smith wanted a three-
year contract and the Cowboys
asked for five years.
Smith got a $1 million signing
bonus and an estimated $650,000
per year plus an incentive pack
age for starts, performance, and
all-star teams that he might make.
Smith and agent Richard Howell
had asked for $700,000 per year.
"The terms in the incentive
clause helped me make my deci
sion,” said Smith, who had a year
remaining at Florida and had al
ready enrolled there to resume
studies for his public recreation
degree.
Jones made a surprise intro
duction of Smith at the Cowboys*
kickoff luncheon.
Coach Jimmy Johnson set up
the introduction by saying to
Jones, “you know there is only
one piece of the puzzle left for
our team to come together.”
Jones bounced up and said
“Well, why didn’t you ask me ear
lier? Ladies and gentlemen I’d
like to introduce you to Emmitt
Smith. ”
Smith came up from the audi
ence. It was a good public rela
tions shot for the Cowboys who
are 22,000 seats short of selling
out their opener,
Johnson said he wasn’t sure
Smith would play in Sunday’s
NFL opener against the San
Diego Chargers in Texas Sta
dium.

Casio’s fx-7000G Graphic Calculator has the power to
expand your mathematical capabilities. Its ability to
solve problems numerically as well as graphically
means you get the big picture fast. Packed with hun
dreds of features and functions, the fx-7000G is
supported by college texts written especially for
use with graphic calculators. And because the
fx-7000G makes learning easier than ever before,
many professors are now designing their courses
around these powerful calculators.
The power to perform advanced
calculations.
Over 193 built-in functions are avail
able with the fx-7000G — including
trigonometric, hyperbolic, logarith
mic and exponential to name a few.
These capabilities allow you to
tackle subjects like math, statis
tics, science and physics with
speed and accuracy. And if there’s
any question about the results,
there’s an instant replay button
that allows you to re-examine your
