Air Force plane crashes in West German]
WEST BERLIN (AP) — A huge
U.S. Air Force transport plane
crashed and burned early Wednes
day at the Ramstein Air Base in West
Germany, killing several people, a
U.S. military spokesman said.
Air Force spokesman Capt. Ed
Worley said the C-5 cargo plane was
headed to Frankfurt’s Rhein-Main
base, but did not know whether the
aircraft was involved in the round-
the-clock deployment of U.S. troops
and supplies to the Persian Gulf.
“There were some deaths and
some people are in the hospital, but
we don’t have the numbers sorted
out yet,” said Worley. “We think
there were 17 people on board.”
Worley said the aircraft crashed
and burned one-quarter mile from
the runway at 12:30 a.m. Wednes
day.
“It crashed in a field right off the
west end of the runway,” Worley
told the Associated Press by tele
phone from Ramstein, about 300
miles southwest of Berlin. “We don’t
expect any civilian casualties.”
Worley said the C-5 belonged to
the 60th Airlift Wing at Travis Air
Force Base in California. He said!
