Has the surge of environmental awareness caused you to change your lifestyle? Ronald K. Dennard Senior - Journalism Mechanicsville, Va. Yes, to a small extent. It has made me more aware of the situa tion. I think I would be more in volved in it if the city had a simpler system of disposal. Rao Kowtha Ph.D. candidate - Management Hyderabad, India Fes, I have begun categorizing my garbage into glass, paper and plastics. I dispose of it at the recy cling dump behind the Deluxe Burger Bar. It’s now become a habit for me. I’ve also quit smok ing. Mary Lee Prigge Junior - Recreation and Parks Round Rock / have become more environ mentally aware. I’ve been collect ing cans since I was in high school. I’m more active, now that it’s eas ier with more places to recycle. Lisa Wood Junior - Theatre Arts/English Fairfield Actually, it has. At my job in the English department, we collect pa per to be recycled, and it has made me more aware of the environ ment. David Ernst Professor - Department of Physics College Station No, I have learned nothing new from the recent surge of environ mental awareness that I was not al ready aware of. I have recycled my aluminum cans for years. Perhaps if it were more convenient to recy cle, I would participate more. John McClain Coordinator of Academic Com puting Services College Station No, my lifestlye hasn’t changed. I have always recycled. Some of it is still a hassle to do, so it’s still not worthwhile. My car’s air-condi tioner also still uses fluorocarbons. Adrienne Elliott Junior - Accounting/Finance Carrollton Not until this summer when I roomed with an environmental ac tivist. She showed me how easy it is to separate our cans, bottles and plastics and take them to the recy cling dump. Brandy Hickman Senior - Accounting Snyder Not really. I don’t believe that the individuals are the cause of the pollution problems. I think it’s the major corporations who are the problem. Companies like McDon alds should stop using Styrofoam. Terry Brown Graduate student - Physics Harrisburg, Pa. I have changed to some degree. My friends are more involved than I am. They boycott many environ mentally unsafe things. This makes me feel guilty when I use them in their presence. ngw. Graduate student - Agroeconom ics Beijing, China No, my lifestyle has not changed. ‘ ? and here’s what you fter and a pho- people from \ question cho sen by the 'editor. Dr. Dennis Driscoll, a Texas A&M biometeorologist, says a positive mental attitude can help reduce the summer heat’s impact. “You can’t think yourself cool,” Driscoll said, “but the negative im pact of our environment can be les sened if you approach it in the right frame of mind.” A psychosomatic element affects how we perceive the weather, he said, because everything around us is filtered through the brain first. “We respond to our environment by the way we perceive it,” said Dris coll, who specializes in the effects of the atmosphere on humans. Driscoll said motivational levels dictate the conditions we can with stand. “If you’re motivated, you can stand just about anything,” he said. For example, ne said, football players trying out for the A&M team can take the incredible heat on Kyle Field in the summer because they are highly motivated to impress the coaches and make the team. Driscoll said a positive mental atti tude helps when coping with the heat. “Much of your thermal comfort depends on your frame of mind,” he said. “That largely determines how you react to environmental condi tions.” Driscoll said his expertise comes from his “professional lifetime,” but added that he is not a medical doc tor. However, he recommends keep ing a positive attitude and staying in doors as much as possible. “We should thank technology for air conditioning,” he said. “If it weren’t for air conditioning, we wouldn’t be here.” ihAb I MEATSA!
