Fredericksburg attracts top racehorses

AUSTIN (AP) — Fredericksburg is attracting
top horses to its second session of pari-mutuel
racing starting today, and track officials are
promising less time in betting lines.
The horses are coming from New Mexico, Ok
lahoma, Louisiana and Texas because their own
ers want part of the $100,000 Quarter Horse of
Texas Breeders Sales Futurity, the biggest pari
mutuel race ever run in the state.
Trials begin today with the final race sched
uled July 22.
The winning horse earns $30,000, and the
other nine finishers also take home part of the
$100,000 purse. About 50 horses are entered in
the trials, with their owners posting a $1,500 en
try fee.
“The better horses there are, the more people
will bet on them,” sponsor David Graham said.
“Purses like this get better horses to Texas.”
The Fredericksburg track, on the grounds of
the Gillespie County Festival and Fair Associa
tion, premiered pari-mutuel racing on Memorial
Day weekend.
More than 5,000 people each day packed the
grandstands. They wagered more than
$800,000, almost double what was forecast.
The second session continues through Thurs
day.
More than 300 horses are entered for the
three days of racing, including Racin Divi, who
has earned $42,000 this year.
Other top horses scheduled to race are Dash
ing Kitty, winner of $25,000, and Mary’s Request,
with $34,000 in earnings.

Police seek information
about boat motor theft
Brazos County Crime Stoppers is
seeking information about the bur
glary of a boat motor from the
Bryan Marine Shop on May 14.
Sometime during the night of
May 14, person(s) cut through a
chain link fence surrounding the
Bryan Marine Shop, 1008 W. Wil
liam Joel Bryan Parkway.
The person(s) then kicked and
pried open an overhead door to gain
entry to the shop.
Once inside, they searched
through inventory and used the
shop’s homemade cart to haul an
outboard boat motor through the
door and hole in the fence.
Officers responding to the re
ported burglary followed the per-
son(s) trail through a vacant lot be
hind the shop to Alamo Street.
The boat motor is a black 1990 15
horsepower Mercury outboard mo
tor, serial #00225089, and is valued
at $1,800.
The motor was in the box when it
was stolen. An orange three-and-a-
half-gallon gas tank compatible with
the motor and a large homemade
cart also were stolen.
STOPPER
775-TIPS
Bryan police detectives believe the
person(s) were familiar with the op
eration and layout of the shop and
believe they will attempt to sell or
trade the items in the local area.
This week the Bryan Police De
partment and Crime Stoppers need
your help in identifying the per-
son(s) responsible for this burglary.
If you have information that
could be helpful, call Crime Stop
pers at 775-TIPS. When you call,
Crime Stoppers will assign you a
coded number to protect your iden
tity.
If your call leads to an arrest and
grand jury indictment, Crime Stop
pers will pay you up to $1,000 in
cash. Crime Stoppers also pays cash
for information on any felony crime
or the location of a wanted fugitive.
Guy Rex dynasty
may end this year
EL PASO (AP) — The dynamic
duo that has spent 10 years creating
beauty queens and beauty pagents,
Richard Guy and Rex Holt, may be
producing their last Miss Texas USA
pageant this week.
The beauty pageant moguls and
their El Paso-based business, Guy-
Rex Associates, has had a rocky
relationship with Miss Universe Inc.
— producers of the Miss USA and
Miss Universe pageants. GuyRex is
unsure if its license agreement to
produce Miss Texas USA 1992 will
be renewed.
“We really don’t know (if GuyRex
will produce another Miss Texas
USA) because our relationship for
the last 2 1 /2 years with Miss Universe
Inc. hasn’t always been good,” said
Fran Jacques, GuyRex spokeswo
man. “They have problems with us
and we don’t think they like us.”
The Miss Texas USA 1991 pag
eant was to be broadcast live Monday
night from San Antonio.
