“We try to find them, but after a
few months, the checks are worth
less,” Sopasakis said. “It’s just not
worth the time, energy, or the
money involved in finding them.
“The extra charge is a much eas
ier solution and the students seem to
understand.”
The Dixie Chicken also continues
to accept checks, but takes them on a
selective basis, the owner said.
“It’s a judgment call on our part,”
Don Ganter, Dixie Chicken owner
said. “We accept checks from our
regular customers and tend to shy
away from temporary checks. Most
of our business comes from the stu
dents and faculty so we tend to cater
to them.”
Richard Benning, owner of Dud-
dley’s Draw, said he has not seen an
increase in hot checks toward the
end of the semesters.
He said Duddley’s has had no
problem with check writers.
“In fact, we enjoy a lot of additio
nal business because many others on
the block are refusing checks,” he
said. “I think 99 percent of the cus
tomers here are honorable and can
balance a check book, and since we
have no service charge for hot
checks, we get paid first when there
is a problem.”
