Lithuania receives
Soviet natural gas
MOSCOW (AP) — The Soviet
Union unexpectedly eased part of its
economic blockade against Lithua
nia, almost doubling the amount of
natural gas flowing into the Baltic
republic, Lithuania said Sunday.
Residents of the republic, which
declared its indepenaence March
11, organized a bicycle rally to show
their defiance of the Kremlin’s deci
sion to shut off oil supplies. The re
public’s television and radio stations
also planned to play Beethoven’s
Ninth Symphony as a symbol of
hope and freedom.
Announcement of the sudden
easing of the gas restriction came af
ter both President Vytautas Land-
sbergis of Lithuanian and a spokes
man for President Mikhail S.
Gorbachev praised a proposed com
promise to their dispute offered by
France and West Germany. The two
Western countries proposed Lithua
nia delay implementing its indepen
dence without rescinding the decla
ration itself.
“The Soviet Union has started
supplying the fertilizer plant at Jo-
nova, which practically stopped op
erating, with natural gas,” said Vil
nius Radio.
“From the beginning of the block
ade, Lithuania had been receiving
3.5 million cubic meters of natural
gas per day and that was just enough
for everyday household needs.
“Now, the fertilizer plant in Jo-
nova is also going to get 3 million
cubic meters of natural gas each day.
This is almost sufficient for the plant
to keep operating normally,” it said
in a broadcast monitored by the Brit
ish Broadcasting Corp. in London.
Before the blockade began, the
republic received about 18 million
cubic meters of natural gas a day.
The radio said about 30 percem
of the plant’s work force, or more
than 1,000 people, would be going
back to work Monday after being
forced off their jobs because of
shortage of gas.
There was no official announce
ment by Moscow of a change of pol
icy. However, in an interview Satur
day with the Tass news agency,
Deputy State Supply Committee
Chairman Vladimir Kosyunin said
Lithuania was receiving 30 percent
of its normal share of natural gas.
When the restriction went into effect
more than a week ago, Lithuania was
receiving only about 16 percent.
Rita Radzavicius, a spokeswoman
for the Information Service of the
Lithuanian Supreme Council legis
lature, confirmed the Jonova plant
had started to receive its allotment of
gas.
But she said it was not yet clear
whether the fertilizers produced at
Jonova would be sent back to the So
viet Union or whether it would be
kept for use in Lithuania.
The Soviet Union has cut off all
oil supplies, and shipments of many
manufactured goods, raw materials
and food items in an effort to make
Lithuania back away from the decla
ration of independence.
Many motorists faced with strict
rationing that limits them to about
seven gallons of gasoline a month
simply parked their cars. Some bus
routes in Vilnius, the capital, have
been cut out, others scaled back.
