A&M improves to 39-15 on year on 1-0, 7-0 wins By VINCE SNYDER Of The Battalion Staff The Texas A&M’s women’s softball team displayed strong pitch ing along with sound hitting as it swept Stephen F. Austin in a Wednesday night doubleheader at the Lady Aggie Softball Field. The Lady Aggies scored only one run during the first game, winning it 1-0. In the second game the bats came alive as A&M scored all seven of their runs in the sixth inning, ending the game due to the seven run limit. With the wins, the Lady Aggies move to 39-15 for the year, and 12-3 in region play. The Ladyjacks fall to 21-19. “We were kind of in a slump late ly,” A&M Coach Bob Brock said. “But our two pitchers pitched good tonight in getting the two shutouts.” Loosing 1-0 in both games of a doubleheader against the University of Texas-Arlington on Tuesday, the Lady Aggies knew what they had to do in order to get back on the right track. They did it with consistent pitch ing from Missi Young in the first game against SFA, and from Dana Mitchell in the second. In the first game the score re mained 0-0 until the bottom of the fourth inning when Stephanie Schulte walked to lead off for the Aggies. She then reached second base on a sacrifice bunt by Angie Hughes. With a bad pitch by SFA pitcher Sandy Green, Schulte scampered to third with only one out for A&M. Lady Aggies’ second baseman Ka ren Kalhoefer drew a walk and kept going to second when SFA wasn’t looking. With A&M runners at second and third, Stacey Segal bounced to the shortstop bringing home Schulte who was gunned down at the plate. Segal continued to second base re peating Kalhoefer’s move, but the Ladyjacks were ready and threw to second. The ball was thrown over the shortstop’s head and rolled into cen ter field. The overthrown ball al lowed Kalhoefer to score from third and the Lady Aggies went up 1-0. Young continued her on-target pitching as she chipped away the plate for strikes and held the Lady- jacks scoreless in the top of the sev enth. The second game got off to the same start, as both teams went scoreless going into the bottom of the sixth inning. A&M’s centerfielder Stacey Crainer led off with a blast to left field, and then moved to second on a wild pitch. Crainer then advanced to third as Michelle Mayfield slapped the ball in front of home plate and then beat out the throw to first. Once again A&M snagged an other base as Mayfield kept running to second while SFA was caught off gaurd. Segal, A&M’s next batter, was able to reach on an infielder’s choice, loading the bases. Lady Aggie Renee Blaha dropped a single into center field, bringing in two runs to make the score 2-0. “I got the hit at the right time,” Blaha said. “Their pitcher was pretty slow, and I had to time her pitch just right.” A&M continued to knock in runs, making the score 7-0, and was able to walk away with another victory over SFA. “In the second game we seemed to put things together,” Brock said. “Maybe this is a sign of things to come.” The Lady Aggies will be back in action tonight in another double- header at Lady Aggie Softball Field. They will take on the Lady Bobcats of Soutwest Texas State. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. ^Western Auto.UMimcoR NEW STORE NOW OPE! 204 HARVEY ROAD, COLLEGE STATION BRING YOUR COUPONS Thes« "super hot" grand opening offers are good with coupons at this location only!
