Frats edge out Corps in thriller
Corps coach Robert Magee (right) leads his team in The Aggie
War Hymn before the charity game with the IFC Wednesday.
By ALAN LEHMANN
Of The Battalion Staff
Although most students only
dream of suiting up and playing
on Olsen Field, All-Star squads
from the Texas A&M Interfra-
terny Council and Corps of Ca
dets got the chance Wednesday
night.
In an effort to increase interac
tion between the two organiza
tions, the teams played a nine-in
ning baseball game in front of
1,069 spectators.
The fraternity team rallied for
two runs in each of the final two
innings to win 11-10.
William Yarnell delivered the
winning single with two-outs in
the bottom of the ninth inning to
end the four-hour marathon.
A&M Athletic Promotions Di
rector Derrick Grubbs said the
event was well organized, and
commended both the fraternities
and Corps for their effort.
“They were really on the ball,”
Grubbs said. “They did a good
job of getting the teams together
on short notice and taking care of
the details.”
Although the teams hadn’t
played before, this could become
an annual event.
Field Hudgens, the coach and
designated hitter for the frater
nity team, said he hopes the series
will be continued.
“This is just an example of how
represenatives from two groups
can get along,” Hudgens said.
“Maybe this will pave the way for
our organizations to work to
gether in the future.”
Proceeds from the game will go
toward scholorships.
All 32 players from each team
got into the game and seemed to
enjoy themselves. Robert Magee,
coach of the Corps squad, said his
players were happy to play.
“Playing on Olsen Field was a
dream come true for these guys,”
Magee said. “It gave them a
chance to relive their glory days
from high school.”
In many ways, it was better
than high school baseball.
Grubbs, the voice of “The
Shack by the Track”, ran the pub
lic adress system and called lucky
numbers. The Diamond Darlings
were also in attendance.
The fraternity team outhit the
Corps squad 12-9 and made less
errors (8-5).
Each team used four pitchen
and Alec Cuellar, who is also a
member of the Aggie 12th Man
Kickoff Squad, took the loss for
the Corps after giving up the
game-winning hit.
