A&M Tami Agassi stares in disbelief after netting a shot against Wisconsin’s Kira Gregersen Friday. The Aggies were defeated, 5-4.
Save specialist gives up Rangers loss
NEW YORK (AP) — In the bull
pen game of chance, the New York
Yankees found four of a kind beats
an ace.
The Yankees got six shutout in
nings from their relievers Sunday
and rallied for three runs in the
eighth against Jeff Russell to beat
the Texas Rangers 3-1.
Russell led American League
stoppers in save percentage last sea
son, converting 38 of 44 opportuni
ties. But he blew this one for Charlie
Hough, hurting himself with a wild
pitch and a throwing error.
“In this job, you’re either a star or
a goat. I was a goat today. I’ll be a
star tomorrow,” Russell said. “But
it’s unfortunate these things happen.
It hurt to see Charlie pitch so well
and then have the game get away. It
eats at you.”
Rick Cerone singled home the ty
ing run, Steve Sax singled home the
go-ahead run and Alvaro Espinoza
hit a sacrifice fly for insurance. The
victory prevented Texas from win
ning its first series at Yankee Sta
dium since 1986.
The Yankees’ pitching again held
up as New York won for the third
time in four games. Emergency
starter Greg Cadaret stepped in
when Chuck Cary went on the dis
abled list and pitched three innings,
allowing Steve Buechele’s home run.
Then the relievers took over. Jeff
Robinson and Lee Guetterman
worked two innings apiece, Eric
Plunk (2-0) pitched the eighth and
Dave Righetti finished for his second
save.
“The bullpen is very relaxed
now,” Righetti said. “Our bullpen
got beat to death for a couple of
years and it created not only a lot of
tension, but a lot of tired pitchers.”
Hough worked seven strong in
nings, shutting out the Yankees on
two singles. But after His second
walk, a leadoff pass to Jesse Barfield,
he left in the eighth.
“I had nothing on that last batter,”
Hough said. “I worked real hard in
the seventh and worked up a sweat,
but the sitting through a long inning
got me.”
Russell already had one save this
season, but put himself in instant
trouble with a wild pitch that catcher
Chad Kreuter could have handled.
Roberto Kelly followed with a bunt
that Russell neatly grabbed with his
bare hand, but he slung wide to
third for an error.
“I just threw it on the wrong side,”
Russell said. “I didn’t even know
where the runner was.”
Barfield was the runner and he
knew he w'ould be out if Russell
made a routine toss.
“When I saw him field it, I said I
better kick it in gear,” Barfield said.
Cerone checked his swing and
blooped a single to center that tied it.
Pincn-hitter Wayne Tolleson sacri
ficed the runners to second and
third, and Sax singled sharply to
right.
Espinoza’s sacrifice fly made it 3-1
and left it up to Righetti. He’s been
the stopper m the past and might as
sume that role this season, depend
ing on how well he does.
Righetti gave up a one-out single
to Steve Buechele, but retired Jeff
Kunkel on a fly ball and struck out
Kreuter.
“The only thing that really scared
me was extra innings,” Yanices
manager Bucky Dent said. “\!t
could’ve really gotten burned up it
the bullpen.”
Buechele’s home run in the set
ond inning was the only scoringuniil
the Yankees rallied.
Hough lost his first start Tuesdat
at T oronto, going five innings and
giving up two runs on fourhitsand
six walks.
Buechele hit his second homerai
of the year on a full-count pitch will!
one out in the second off Cadaret
Cary was scratched just befott
gametime and placed on the 21$t
disabled list with an inflamed leftei
bow.
Buechele ended a 1-for-12 slug
and hit Texas’ sixth home runia
seven games this season. The Ya^
kees have still not homered in four
games and began the day tied will
M ontreal and the Chicago V
Sox for the fewest home runs in th
majors.
Astros’ Kerfeld
gives up late
run to Dodgers
HOUSTON (AP) — Juan Samuel
doubled off Charley Kerfeld and
scored the tiebreaking run on the re
liever’s wild pitch with one out in the
10th inning to give the Los Angeles
Dodgers a 5-4 victory over the Hous
ton Astros on Sunday.
It was the Astros’ fifth loss in their
first six games.
After Samuel doubled, Willie
Randolph sacrificed him to third.
Kerfeld (0-2) threw 1-2 pitch to Hu-
bie Brooks that got by catcher Craig
Biggio allowing Samuel to score.
Jay Howell (1-0) pitched two in
nings in his first appearance of the
season for the victory.
Randolph tied the score 4-4 when
he homered with one out in the
eighth inning off reliever Danny
Darwin. Randolph, who hit his first
home run last season on Aug. 20,
had three hits and drove in three
runs.
Biggio gave the Astros a 4-3 lead
in the fifth with a run-scoring single,
his sixth consecutive hit. Biggio
in the
struck out his next time up
eighth.
Gerald Young and Biggio led off
the game with singles off Tim
Belcher, and Bill Doran homered to
give the Astros a 3-0 lead.
