Rice, Southern Louisiana pay weekend visits
ByNADJA SABAWALA

Senior Shaun O’Donovan will lead
Texas A&M’s men’s tennis team
against a couple of tough opponents
this weekend in hopes of adding two
more wins to its record.
Friday, the Aggies host Rice in
Southwest Conference play, and on
Saturday, A&M faces the University
ofSouthern Lousiana.
Both matches begin at 1:30 p.m.
and are at the Omar Smith Tennis
Center.
“Rice and USL are both tough
teams and we’ll be a slight underdog
in both matches,” Coach David Kent
said.
“We ll have to play our very best
to win both days.”
The 14-5 Aggies are only 2-3 in
the conference, but have won their
last three dual matches.
O’Donovan, ranked 48th in the

Coaches Association ratings, is 15-3
this season and 8-2 against nationally
ranked oppponents.
O’Donovan’s wins include a three-
set victory over then-21st-ranked
Luis Ruette of Texas Christian.
As A&M’s No. 1 player, O’Dono
van will pair off with Rice’s Larry
Pearl, who is 20-8 this year.
The Owls, 8-6 overall and 3-2 in
the conference, also have a tough
team in doubles with Pearl/Ken
Thome, ranked 14th in the nation
with a 16-5 record.
Rice’s No. 1 doubles team faces
the Aggies’ Gustavo Espinosa/Blake
Barsalou, 6-5 for the season.
But the USL Rajin’ Cajuns will not
take a backseat to the Owls and will
be equally as tough.
With an 11-7 season record, USL
has 45th-ranked Curtis Hollinger as
its No. 1 singles player.
Hollinger boasts a 13-4 overall re
cord, including a three-match win
ning streak. His match against O’Do
novan promises to be exciting.
