Pesticide levels remain constant, secretary says TEMPLE (AP) — U.S. Agricul ture Secretary Clayton Yeutter said those who are pushing for less pesti cide use on commercial crops should he patient. Although polls show that concern pver pesticide residue is a growing issue, Yeutter said there has not been enough research to allow farm ers to lower their pesticide use. “We’d like to see the level of input m farming reduced — whether it be pesticides or herbicides or any other agricultural chemicals,” Yeutter said. “But farmers cannot afford to lake those steps until or unless they have definitive information that says they can do so without putting them selves into bankruptcy. “We can’t be demanding that farmers reduce pesticide or agricul tural chemical usage until we know that they can do so without reducing their net incomes.” Yeutter, speaking here Tuesday night, also said the Bush administra tion hopes to significantly increase the free trade of agricultural goods during current world trade negotia tions. “It is incredibly shortsighted for us to focus only on the domestic market,” he said.
