If jos Heart assist implant runs on batteries HOUSTON (AP) — Texas Heart Institute surgeons plan to implant a battery-powered heart assist device that will enable a pa tient to move freely and perhaps leave the hospital while awaiting a transplant. Surgeons, however, must first get federal approval, said Dr. OH. Frazier, director of the Houston-based institute’s cardio vascular surgical research labo ratories and heart transplant service. The institute and Thermo Car- diosystem Inc., a bioengineering company, already have applied for a Food and Drug Administra tion investigational device exemption that would permit them to use the battery-powered device in patients awaiting heart transplants. The two entities have worked together on heart pumps for sev eral years, and their experts be lieve the battery-powered device is an important step forward. Current heart assist devices are powered by large air-driven pumps, making movement cum bersome for patients. “With this newer electrical pump, you do have a wire through the skin, but it’s battery- controlled,” said Frazier, who hopes the implant can be made this summer. The heart assist pump or left ventricular assist device performs most of the pumping function of a normal heart’s left ventricle. Many patients can live for months with the device. One Texas Heart Institute pa tient has lived 233 days with the air-driven pump replacing most of his natural heart’s function. Namibia set free from S. Africa Independence marks democratic triumph for last African colony WINDHOEK, Namibia (AP) — Namibia became the world’s newest nation Wednesday as Africa’s last colony celebrated the end of 75 years of South African rule with tra ditional tribal dances and choirs singing liberation songs fi*T I he season for violence has passed for Namibia and the whole of southern Africa. It is above all a moment for hope; hope that the future of this vast and beautiful land will bring peace.” — F.W. de Klerk, South African President The South African flag was low ered for the last time just after mid night local time by South African soldiers and the new blue, red and green Namibian flag raised by Nam ibian troops to a bugle fanfare. Thousands of blacks and whites cheered and clapped the flag cere mony, but some yelled “Down, down!” as the South Africa Hag was lowered. U.N. Secretary-General Javier Perez, de Cuellar hailed the new na tion’s independence as a triumph for democracy. "The independence of Look out below Namibia also marks the triumph of the international rule of law,” he said. “The achievement bears elo quent testimony to the norms of de mocracy and human rights.” Perez de Cuellar swore in former guerrilla leader Sam Nujoma as the first president of the new nation’s government. “Africa’s last colony is from this hour liberated,” Nujoma said in his inaugural address. Choirs sang “Cod Bless Africa” as the crowds cheered in Windhoek Athletic Stadium. Tribal dancers sang and jumped with joy as hun dreds of foreign leaders and officials watched the celebrations. South African President F.W. de Klerk marked the end of his nation’s rule of Namibia by calling for peace in the region. “1 stand here tonight as an advocate for peace,” he said. “The season for violence has passed for Namibia and the whole of south ern Africa. “It is above all a moment for hope; hope that the future of this vast and beautiful land will bring peace,” de Klerk said. Soldiers of the new Namibian army in blue uniforms and green be rets marched briskly through the stadium to the beat of drums as offi cers bearing swords barked com mands. About 25,000 spectators, some of whom waited 12 hours for the ceremony, roared approval at their first sight of the new army.
