“Gambler’s House” shows a win
ning hand of quality acting, directing
and a unique musical score, and al
though the characters in the comedy
don’t win much, the audience can’t
lose.
The Aggie Players’ production is
the world premiere of the transla
tion from the Spanish by Golden
Age scholar Vern Williamsen.
The original play was written by
Antonio Mira de Amescua in 1616,
the year Shakespeare died.
Set in Madrid in the 17th century,
the play centers on the relationship
of Alejandro and Isabel, who have
been married for one week at the
play’s opening.
But Alejandro already is gambling
away his wife’s dowry, much to the
chagrin of his father, Marcelo,
played by Jeffery Dench of London’s
Royal Shakespeare Company.
Understandably popular with his
gambling friends, since he always
loses, Alejandro is the character
around whom most of the comedic
action develops.
Determined to break his son of his
incessant gambling and womanizing,
Marcelo plans elaborate tricks, work
ing in cahoots with Isabel and their
servant, Roque.
Meanwhile, Alejandro and his
friends, Don Luis and Don Diego,
try to win the heart of the beautiful
Angela.
At the advice of her greedy
mother, Angela manages to lead all
three of them on so that Don Luis
and Don Diego give her their win
nings from Alejandro as gifts to
prove their love.
Director Dr. Roberto Porno of
Texas A&M’s Department of Speech
Communications and Theater Arts,
skillfully moves the audience’s atten
tion from one group of characters to
the next, even witn all on stage at
once.
The audience’s attention moves
back and forth between the card
game and Angela’s flirting with who
mever is winning at the moment,
keeping the action moving on mul
tiple levels.
By the second act, all the plot de
velopment really begins to pay off.
Dench’s Shakespearean training is
evident in a powerful scene with
Mary Ellen Brennen, who plays An
gela’s mother.
The audience gave that scene
spontaneous applause. The hila
riously diabolical characterization of
Don Luis by John Flores garnered
the same response.
In the final act, Alejandro is bro
ken, Angela learns something about
greed, and everyone ends up mar
ried, although not to whom you may
expect.
It is apparent that the play was not
meant to be a faithful reproduction
of a 17th-century Spanish play-

would end up being interpreted
through 20th-century values any
way.
The completly synthesized musi
cal score, for example, heightens the
feeling of the play’s updating, and
ultimately makes the play more en
joyable.
