Gathers collapses
dies Sunday at 23
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Hank
Gathers, the West Coast Confer
ence’s all-time leading scorer and
No. 11 on the NCAA’s all-time scor
ing list, died Sunday night after col
lapsing on the court during Loyola
Marymount’s game against Port
land.
He was 23.
Gathers was pronounced dead at
Daniel Freeman Marina Hospital,
where he was taken after collapsing
with 13:34 left in the First half of the
WCC tournament game.
He died at 6:55 p.m. PST, a
school spokesman said.
As a junior last season. Gathers
became only the second player in
NCAA history to lead the nation in
scoring and rebounding, averaging
32.7 points and 13.7 rebounds.
A 6-foot-7, 210-pound center
from Philadelphia, Gathers was
forecast as a First-round selection in
this year’s NBA draft. He passed up
the draft following his junior season.
Last season, he led the nation in
scoring and rebounding.
It was the second time this season
that Gathers has fainted on his home
court during a game.
On Dec. 9 against UC Santa Bar
bara, Gathers went to the foul line
with 13:56 left in the second half,
missed his First free throw, stepped
aw'ay from the foul line and wet
down.
He underwent several days
tests in a local hospital and returnei
after missing two games.
Gathers passed those tests and be

HOUSTON (AP) — Akeem Ola-
juwon, who usually downplays his
heroics on the court, was all smiles
after collecting the third quadruple-
double in NBA history.
“That’s a big accomplishment,”
Olajuwon said after scoring 29
points with 18 rebounds, 11 blocked
shots and 10 assists. “Coach (Don)
Chaney had asked me if I wanted to
go back into the game to get that
block.”
He got two blocks in the final 4:02
as Houston won 129-120 over
Golden State Saturday.
When the game ended, Olajuwon
was only credited with nine assists,
but the Rockets’ staff looked at the
film after the game and detected an
uncredited assist.
“It’s legitimate,” Chaney said.
“I’ve got it on film.”
The uncredited assist happened
when Olajuwon made a kick-out
pass to Buck Johnson, who sank a
jumper.
Despite his performance, which
also included five steals, Chaney said
the center is capable of more.
NEW YORK (AP) — Most evenings lately, the door
to Fay Vincent’s office swings open sometime after 6
g .m. For the next 30 minutes, the commissioner of
aseball holds what amounts to a fireside chat.
“I’ve reached an agreement with the union that there
will be baseball in my administration,” he said one eve
ning, his smile beginning to widen. “•We just haven’t
agreed on which year.”
Negotiations between the players association and
owners resume Monday, the 19th day of the spring
training lockout. Vincent, at least to the union, appears
to be the catalyst for movement on management’s side.
“The first glimmer of interest on the clubs side of
reaching an agreement seemed to coincide with his get
ting involved,” union chief Donald Fehr said Sunday.
The sides remain apart on salary arbitration eligibil
ity, roster size, the benefit plan, minimum salary and
collusion language. They haven’t formally met since
Feb. 24 and opening day probably will be delayed if
there is no agreement by the end of this week.
“We’ve been gone tor several days,” said Fehr, who
spent the week in Arizona, California and Florida rallv
ing players. “It seems to me appropriate at the leasttk

Vincent has sounded pessimistic throughout negotia

sues. But none were mixed with the distrust of the base
ball talks.

Vincent joined baseball last April 1 as Deputy Coral
missioner under A. Bartlett Giamatti. He spent his fm!|
five months coordinating the Pete Rose investigation
and became commissioner on Sept. 13, 13 days aftei
Giamatti’s fatal heart attack.
