The No. 22 Texas A&M baseball
team will be looking for revenge
when it faces No. 1 1 LSU Friday at 3
p.m. at Olsen Field.
The Aggies and Tigers will finish
the three-game set with a 1 p.m.
doubleheader Saturday.
Last May, the Tigers ended the
Aggies’ season by beating them twice
in the NCAA Central Regional 13-5
and 5-4 in College Station.
An Aggie win in either game
would have sent A&M to Omaha,
Neb. for the College World Series.
It was a tough way to end such a
promising season for the 58-7 Ag
gies, said senior catcher John Wood.
“The feeling was something I’ll
never really be able to describe,”
Wood said. “The pain felt sort of like
somebody had died.”
Last weekend, the Aggies were
treated rudely on their Louisiana
road trip, losing four of six games to
Louisiana Tech and Northeast Loui
siana.
The Aggies dropped to 11-4 for
the season and plummeted from No.
8 to No. 22 in the College Basebal
l/ESPN poll.
LSU is 7-3 after beating Southern
Mississippi Wednesday night. Coach
Skip Bertman’s club is not the same
as it was last season. Star pitchers
Ben McDonald, Russell Springer
and Curtis Leskanic have gone on to
sign professional contracts, and only
three starters return.
The Tigers won’t be the only new
faces at Olsen Field. The Aggies re
turned no position starters from last
year’s team, and have had to rely on
JUCO transfers this season.
San Jacinto transfers Dan Robin
son and Rich Robertson have led the
Aggies.
Robinson, a junior rightfielder,
has the team lead in homeruns (3)
and RBI (13), and is second on the
team with a .300 batting average.
Robertson, a lefthander pitcher, is
3-0 with a 0.82 ERA and has struck
out 21 batters in 22 innings. He was
named the Coppertone National
Player of the Week on Feb. 19.
On the road trip, Robertson one-
hit Louisiana Tech and saved Mon
day’s 6-5 win over Northeast Loui
siana.
Robertson will pitch either Fri
day’s game or the nightcap Satur
day. He will be joined in the starting
rotation by sophomore Ronnie Allen
(1-1, 2.95 ERA) and Pat Sweet (3-1,
3.97 ERA).
All three games will be broadcast
on the radio by KTAM (1240 AM).
Saturday’s games will be televised on
TCA Cable Channel 31.
The Brazos Valley Food Bank will
be accepting donations of canned
goods at Olsen Field Saturday.
The new message center atop the
Olsen Field scoreboard will be ded
icated Friday.

haircut at Wednesday’s game against Houston.
The 6-10 junior shaved his head, leaving the
shape of a basketball. A&M closes its regular
season Sunday against Texas Tech, and four se
niors will be playing their final game at G. Rollie
White Coliseum.

Spurs: All is not happy in paradise
Brown unhappy, yearns for college coaching
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Spurs
coach Larry Brown yearns for his
days as a collegiate coach and could
return to the college ranks after the
NBA season, according to a pub
lished report.
Despite success with the Spurs this
season, Brown said he is frustrated
over the lengthy NBA season and its
lack of time for practice and teach
ing.
He also regrets not accepting the
UCLA coachingjob after leaving the
University of Kansas in 1988, the
year he took over as Spurs coach, the
San Antonio Express-News reported
Thursday.
“I think I should have taken that
job but, in some ways, it has worked
out best because I did learn a great
deal last year with all the losses,”
“W e play three or four
games a week, about 17 a
month, and there’s simply
no time to work on skills, no
time to teach, and that’s
what I love doing.”
— Larry Brown,
Spurs coach
when San Antonio went 21-61,
Brown told the newspaper Wednes
day night in Oakland, Calif., where
the Spurs lost in overtime to the
Golden State Warriors, 144-135.
“I wouldn’t go through it again
but I did get the chance to come
back and try again, a chance I really
didn’t think I’d get,” he said.
The Express-News, citing uniden
tified sources, said Brown has a stip
ulation in his five-year contract with
the Spurs that he could leave after
the 1989-90 season.
If he decides to remain, however,
it becomes binding for the next
three seasons, the newspaper said.
Brown declined to discuss any
contractual matters, but did say as
pects of professional basketball con
tinue to bother him.
“We play three or four games a
week, about 17 a month, and there's
simply no time to work on skills.no
time to teach, and that’s what 1 love
doing,” Brown said.
“Plus, I have a hard time getting
over the losses. It’s just not easy for
me to get to the next game after a
loss,” he said.
“I think that any time a player
steps on the floor he should feelthai
the coaches have prepared him the
best way possible and, after the
game, will work on faults he may
have.”
Brown also said he dislikes trad
ing and waiving players.
