Treasury owes Texans missing money
AUSTIN (AP) — The state Treasury an
nounced Tuesday that some 120,000 Texans, in
cluding major league baseball pitcher Nolan
Ryan and presidential son George W. Bush, have
almost $ 100 million coming.
The missing money comes from lost and for
gotten checking and savings accounts, utility de
posits, oil royalties or corporate stocks.
“There are a lot of people who have money in
these accounts. It is important for them to claim
it,” Treasurer Ann Richards said.
The names of all those with lost or forgotten
funds due them will be published Sunday in
newspapers across the state.
Most of the unclaimed accounts were dormant
for three to five years before they were turned
over to the state. All the listed accounts are worth
at least $50. The largest totals $102,772, which
Richards said is owed to Helen B. Wolfe of Alief.
Ryan, who pitches for the Texas Rangers, has
$543 in a savings and loan account, Richards
said. Bush has $1,592 coming. Gov. Bill Clements
is owed $212, Houston oil man and Republican
lieutenant governor hopeful Rob Mosbacher Jr.
is owed $61.50 and Houston Rockets basketball
star Akeem Olajuwon has $354 coming.
“Each year we try to locate as many people as
we can and return this money to them. Last year,
about $26 million was given back to rightful own
ers,” Richards said.
Anyone owed money can claim it by contacting
the Treasury over a toll-free telephone line or in
writing. y
“There is no set time limit to make a claim on
these accounts,” Richards said. “Money turned
over to the state Treasury can he claimed at any
time in the future by the original owner or his or
her heirs.”
The unclaimed money list first was published
shortly after Richards took office in 1983. Since
then, the office has collected more than $273 mil
lion
