Commander’s sore throal 5
postpones shuttle launch ~
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Atlantis’ com
mander got a sore throat Wednesday, forcing NASA to
postpone for at least 24 hours the launch of the shuttle
on a secret, all-military mission to put a spy satellite in
orbit.
A space agency statement said a bad weather forecast
also was a factor in the postponement, but officials said
that if not for the illness they would have continued the
countdown, hoping for clear skies by launch time early
Thursday.
Navy Capt. John O. Creighton has “basically a sore
throat with a little head congestion,” agency spokesman
Kyle Herring said. “He does not have a fever. It could
be an indication of a cold coming on.”
laij
Herring said Creighton would not be replaced on the
flight because his illness is not serious. NASA said
Creighton’s health and the weather will be evaluated
Thursday in deciding whether to attempt a launch Fri
day morning.
“We’ve never had a postponement due to the illness
of an astronaut; diis is the first time in the space pro
gram,” Herring said.
In 1970, astronaut Thomas K. Mattingly was
off the Apollo 13 crew a few days before the flighi
to lift off for the moon. But backup astronaut Jacks,,
gert replaced him without delaying the (light.
Herring said Creighton and the other torn Alla:
crew members were healthy when they took a physi
exam on Tuesday and that Creighton had approach
the (light surgeon Wednesday with his probjem
have been in semi-isolation the last week, their corns]
limited to immediate family members and essem
launch officials to reduce the possibility ofexposurej
illness.
The afternoon announcement came shortly
technicians were to begin pumping more than half;
million gallons of propellant into Atlantis’ fuel tank
the four-day mission, which was to end at Edwards
Force Base, Calif.
Sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity,i
ported the astronauts were to deploy a 37,300
$500 million spy satellite capable of taking super-slur
reconnaissance photos and listening in on militaryanij
diplomatic communications around the world.
Lawmakers
begin lobbying
for Osprey craft
WASHINGTON (AP) — With a
sense of theater, lawmakers from
Texas and Pennsylvania began a
new lobbying campaign Wednesday
to save the V-22 Osprey, the stubby
winged aircraft that can take off like
a helicopter and fly like a plane.
Rep. Curt Weldon, R-Pa., said he
hoped to go for a ride on the Osprey
this spring with Defense Secretary
Dick Cheney — perhaps even mak
ing a landing on the Washington
Mall.
“I think when he flies in it, there’s
no way he can turn it down,” Wel
don said in an interview after the
press conference. “It’s revolutionary
in what it can do.”
Bell Helicopter Textron Inc. in
Fort Worth and a Boeing Helicopt
ers plant in Pennsylvania are the
contracting partners for the Osprey,
which got no new production money
from Congress last year, but did re
ceive $255 million in research and
development funds.
Campaigning continues
for Nicaraguan elections
MANAGUA, Nicaragua (AP)
— Thousands of people gathered
on flag-bedecked streets Wednes
day for a campaign-closing rally
in support of President Daniel
Ortega and the Sandinista party’s
effort to keep its power for six
more years.
“Let’s celebrate victory now!”
read the front-page headline in
Barricada, the official Sandinista
National Liberation Front news
paper, with Sunday’s election
four days away.
The headline was sandwiched
between color photos of Ortega
and his running mate, Vice Presi
dent Sergio Ramirez.
Many Sandinista supporters
began gathering before dawn,
sporting yellow, red or black
“Daniel Presidente” T-shirts and
baseball caps in the party’s red-
and-black colors.
Ortega’s main challenger is Vi-
oleta Barrios de Chamorro of the
United National Opposition, a co
alition of 14 parties and one na
tive Indian organization.
“We are here to support the
revolution and defeat Violeta and
omJ
her Contra friends,” said
Alvarado, one of about 250 di
abled veterans of the war
the U.S.-supported Contraguei
i ilia movement.
Alvarado said he had beenim-l
able to walk since Aug. 1, 1981
when he was blasted byaConirJ
grenade. He said he and 22olH
paraplegic veterans had wheelej
their way on the group’s 17-4
160-mile trek from the Honi
ran border town of El Espino.
Public transport was neaik
non-existent in Managua as buse
and trucks were diverted tolal
ing people to a large lakeiil
plaza for the rally.
The vote to choose a preskfa
and vice-president, a 90-meml)t:|
National Assembly, municipi!
councils for 144 towns, and tv
regional councils for the Ada®
Coast is seen as a plebiscite on
years of Sandinista rule.
Despite a massive campaigtid|
fort and opinion polls thatp
ally give Ortega the lead, ditti
was still uncertainty about t
outcome.
Heart-liver recipient still fighting
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Doctors
for 12-year-old Stormie Jones, the
world’s first recipient of a heart-liver
transplant, spent much of Wednes
day trying to stop internal bleeding
that began shortly after her second
liver transplant.
The White Settlement girl’s sec
ond operation in two days began
about 8:50 a.m., according to Lynn
McMahon, spokeswoman for Chil
dren’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
Doctors began to suspect internal
bleeding after the girl’s blood pres
sure began dropping about 8 p.m.
Tuesday, seven hours after her
transplant ended. Stormie had re
gained consciousness and was listed
in critical condition in the hospital’s
intensive care unit.
Wednesday morning, hospital of
ficials said surgeon Dr. Andreas
Tzakis, who performed the trans
plant, did not believe the bleeding
was serious.
“It’s not uncommon to have some
internal bleeding,” hospital
spokeswoman Margy Buczynski
said.
“They really are not considering
this any type of setback,” McMahon
said. “Stormie is doing very well. She
is incredibly strong.”
Doctors decided Feb. 13 that
Stormie needed a new liver. Her
First transplanted liver had been per
manently damaged by hepatitis
caused by an unknown virus.
Stormie had asked for a new liver
in November because she was tired
of problems with her health, accord
ing to her mother, Lois “Suzie" Pur
cell, 33.
Symptoms of liver inflammation
began to appear as early as four
months ago, hut Stormie became es
pecially ill two weeks ago, suffering
from weakness, jaundice and itchi
ness, her parents said.
Her heart remained healthy and
was not affected by the hepatitis.
After Tuesday’s 10-hour opera
tion, Tzakis said Stormie had toler
ated the procedure well.
Stormie’s first transplanted liver
had shown some evidence of reject
ion in November, Tzakis said. The
problem, however, seemed to clear
up after doctors began administer
ing FK-506, a new, experimental
Japanese anti-rejection drug.
The girl and her family — her
mother, stepfather and her 16-year-
old sister, Misty — arrived in Pitts
burgh for the transplant Monday
evening.
Stormie received a new heart and
liver at Children’s on Feb. 14, 1984,
to control levels of cholesterol 10
times higher than normal. Her cho
lesterol levels have since decreased
to nearly normal, Tzakis said.
Dr. Thomas Starzl replaced the
girl’s heart and liver with those of a
4-year-old girl who had died in a
New York car accident.
