Power struggle
wreaks havoc
on jewelry co.
KERRVILLE (AP) — Like his
jewelry, James Avery’s company has
always stood for Christian values
and brotherly love.
The corporate pledge spells out
what he sells in silver doves and gold
crosses: respect for tradition, Judeo-
Christian ethics and the affirmation
of them found in the Scripture.
But behind this image of love and
peace has erupted a power struggle
scandalizing the town where Avery
has been crafting crosses and other
jewelry for more than 30 years.
The bitter court battle pits ousted
company president Charles Wolf-
mueller Jr. against the corporate pa
triarch, exposing a fight over every
thing from future profits to
allegations of an extramarital
relationship.
Wolfmueller says he was wrong
fully fired, and he wants compensa
tion. Avery’s estranged wife is trying
to keep Wolfmueller’s claims from
interfering with her own divorce set
tlement involving the corporation.

And in the process, Wolfmueller
is pushing the Averys’ private lives
into public light, accusing Avery of
letting an extramarital relationship
shape his business decisions.
Avery dismisses the suit and its ac
cusations as “mudslinging.”
It’s all a conversation-starter in
this town of 20,000, where Wolf
mueller is known as a former school
board president and Avery once was
voted “citizen of the year.”
FORE WORTH (AP) — Five al
leged Ku Klux Klan members are
being discharged from the military
because they are “active” members
of the white-supremacist group, a
Carswell Air Force Base official said.
Membership alone is not a viola
tion of military conduct codes, but
“active” membership constitutes a vi
olation, base spokeswoman Capt.
Barbara Carr said.
Carr said the administrative dis
charge recommendations were
based on violations of an Air Force
regulation that prohibits members
from actively participating in su
premacist causes or attempting to
create illegal discrimination based
on race.
Under the regulation, “active par
ticipation includes publicly demon
strating or rallying, fund raising, re
cruiting and training members, and
organizing or leading.”
“Membership in the Klan does not
violate the Universal CodeofMi
tary Justice,” the legal guideline
that govern all military personnel
Carr said. “The key word is'actk

American sexuality
not adventuresome
Survey refutes popular beliefs
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Ameri
can adults say they have intercourse
an average of once a week, but those
over 70 have sex less than once a
month; and one person in five
claims to have abstained entirely in
the past year, according to a survey
released Sunday.
The findings, based on a long-
running survey of 1,500 households
across the country, suggest that
Americans are not as sexually adven
turesome as they often are por
trayed.
“This shows that the sexual behav
ior of Americans is more circums
pect and traditional than the liber
tine impression we get from the
P opular media and fiction,” Tom W.
mith of the University of Chicago,
who directed the survey, said.
A separate survey found that
teen-age boys are also less sexually
active than their on-the-prowl image
would imply. It found that adoles
cents seem to be having sex less of
ten, with fewer girls and at a later
age than teen-agers did a decade
ago.
“This contrasts sharply with the
view that most young men are sex
ually promiscuous,” Fredya L.
Sonenstein of the Urban Institute in
Washington, who analyzed the re
sults, said.
Both reports were among sex sur
veys outlined at a meeting of the
American Association for the Ad
vancement of Science.
The University of Chicago results
were based on interviews and ques
tionnaires administered to a cross-
section of adults in 1988 and 1989.
The questions were added to the
General Social Survey, which has
been conducted annually since 1972.
Surprisingly little is known about
the sex lives of ordinary Americans,
Smith said.
His survey found that on average,
adults have sex 57 times a year, or
about once a week.
“We don’t know what night of the
week,” he said, “but it sounds like
the traditional stereotype of every
Saturday night.”
Sexual frequency dropped with
age from about 78 times a year for
those under 40 to eight times for
those over 70. Overall, married peo
ple have sex 67 times a year, sepa
rated people 66 times, divorced and

However, 22 percent of people
said they had no sex partners at all
during the previous year. Nine per

nent, as were 86 percent of widowed
people.
Among other findings:
•Adults say they have had an av
erage of seven sex partners since age
18. Divorced people have had 13,
the most of any group. ,
•Between 91 percent and 93 per
cent of people have been exclusively
heterosexual during their adult

been bisexual, and less than 1 per
cent are exclusively homosexual.
About 3 percent have never had sex.
