this year and even though we lost,
we outscored them in the second
half and we outrebounded them.
“We play real well on our home-
court, and I hope a lot of people
come out to the game. We’re ready
to play.”
Whether Herner will be ready to
play remains in question, though. If
she does, she’ll draw Texas junior
guard Amy Claborn (6.8 points, 3.5
rebounds) as her defensive assign
ment.
The Lady Longhorns’ top three
guns are forwards Susan Anderson
(10 points, 5.9 rebounds) and Vicki
Hall (15.8 points, 6.7 rebounds), and
guard Cinietra Henderson (11.1
points, 6.8 rebounds).
The Lady Aggies, 15-7 overall
and 7-4 in the SWC, are fourth in
the conference standings and are
just a half-game away from third.
But they’ve won four of their last
five games and are 10-1 at G. Rollie
White this year.
A&M will need Herner’s lead
ership if they’re going to have a
chance against Texas. She is a four-
year starter for the Lady Aggies, and
one of only two seniors on the team.
“I try to take that leadership role
upon myself when I feel like some
one needs to lead by example,”
Herner said. “(Junior gaurd)
Yvonne Hill does a real good job of
leadership on the team — she has a
real good attitude. I try to be a
leader.
“I have a good relationship with
Coach Hickey. I know what she
wants to do and what she wants us to
do out on the court, so I try to take
more responsibility and making sure
things go smoothly.”
However, things don’t always go
smoothly for Herner. She leads the
team in turnovers, and has been
known on occasion to throw her en
tire body around for the sake of a
play. But she said that brand of
physical play works well for her, in
cluding her game against Houston.
Before the game, Hickey, who of
ten has told Herner not to shoot in
specific games, told the senior that
the Lady Cougars wouldn’t be
looking for her to score and would
sag off of her defensively.
The result: Herner led the Lady
Aggies on 9-of-12 shooting, and 10-
of-11 free throws, as well as adding
seven assists, four rebounds and
three steals. A&M won, 88-67.
“Some of the best games I’ve had
are when I play real physically,”
Herner said. “The Houston game
was pretty much the most physical
game I’ve played. I had no idea I
had 28 points — I knew I had a pre
tty good game, but not that good. It
really helped my confidence, and we
really needed that win.”
A win over the 18-3 Lady Long
horns would do wonders for the
Lady Aggies’ confidence Friday. She
said the Lady Aggies have had the
right frame of mind this week in
practice while preparing for Texas.
“In years past, we’ve looked at
Texas as the game,” Herner said. “If
we beat Texas, then we’d have a win
ning season no matter what our re
cord was. But this week has been
really relaxed. We’re looking at it as
just another game.
“Not to overlook Texas in any
way, but we’ve got to go to Arkansas
next Tuesday. We’ve just got to do
the things we’ve got to do, and not
be so timid when we get on the court
against them.”

The 14th-ranked Texas A&M
baseball team returns to Olsen
Field Friday afternoon, to start a
weekend series against University
of Texas-Pan American.
Friday’s 3:00 p.m. game will be
followed by a 1:00 p.m. Saturday
doubleheader.
The Aggies improved to 4-0 on
the season Tuesday, with a 4-2
road win over Sam Houston State
University. The Broncs split a
doubleheader with St. Edward’s
to drop to 2-2.
Although the Aggies have a
perfect record, they have been
shakey at the plate, managing
only a .185 batting average. They
had only five hits against Sam
Houston, and were outhit by the
University of Texas-Arlington in
the season opener.
However, the Aggies ha !
made up for their lack of hitlii
with solid pitching. Tuesday, rt|
lievers Brent Gilbert and
Bull aid combined for 5.S inning
of one-run pitching.
Sophomore Ronnie Allen «l

And Suber isn’t the only Aggie to
have particularly good nights when
it come to playing Texas.
Earlier this season, junior guard
Freddie Ricks scored 23 points and
