Love bracelet permanent expression of affection
NEW YORK (AP) — A dozen
roses ... a box of chocolates ... frilly
lingerie ... a Victorian card. Tradi
tional Valentine’s Day traditions, all.
Ponchos that zip together ... dou
ble-crested umbrellas ... sleeping
bags for two ... contemporary greet
ing cards. Valentine’s gifts updated.
In fine jewelry there are Paloma
Picasso’s x’s and o’s, Elsa Peretti’s
hearts and, of course, a dazzling ar
ray of diamonds.
All are meant to express fondness,
love, undying devotion. But none,
perhaps, is literally so binding as
Cartier’s love bracelet.
It was conceived some 20 years
ago by Aldo Cipullo, a history buff
and jewelry designer.
Cartier says Cipullo’s early work
centered around modern interpreta
tions of ancient design terms and
legends.
One that particularly fascinated
him was the chastity belt that a war
rior, before going off on a cam-
aign, locked on his wife to preserve
er fidelity.
Cipullo’s desire to create a mod
ern-day symbol of a committed
relationship led him to design the
love bracelet.
To encircle the wrist, the two-
piece bracelet must be bolted to
gether with a screwdriver.
And because it fits the wrist much
the way a ring fits the finger, it can’t
be slipped off over the hand.
Cartier launched the love bracelet
in the spirit of the item: No cus
tomer would be allowed to buy one
for himself.
The policy has long since
changed, but each bracelet is still
available in sizes and accompanied
by a small vermeil screwdriver. Pre
sumably, possession of the tool is a
matter of purchaser discretion.
Each is made by hand of 18 karat
yellow gold and retails for $2,750,
including screwdriver. A newer ver
sion with diamonds fetches $5,300.
Among the famous who have
worn the Cartier shackle are Prin
cess Diana, Elizabeth Taylor and
Barbra Streisand.
But, according to a Cartier
spokesman, perhaps no one will
equal the record of one 40-ish
woman who arrived at the store one
day with six love bracelets on one
wrist, three on the other.
When asked to elaborate, she re-
E lied: “Listen, honey. I’ve had a few
>vers in my time, and I made each
one of them give me a love bracelet.
“For me, these nine bracelets are
like the notches on a gunfighter’s
pistol.”

Cookbook offers men advice
on preparing Valentine meal
NEW YORK (AP) — There’s
help for the single man who
wants to give that special woman
in his life a unique Valentine’s
Day gift — a home-cooked meal.
It’s in a paperback book called
“Eating In: The Official Single
Man’s Cookbook” (Corkscrew
Press, $8.95). The book is the
work of two 30-ish bachelors,
Rich Lippman and Jose Maldo
nado, who claim it “fills the gap
between Mrs. Paul and Julia
Child.”
The book addresses the age-
old question of why men can’t fol
low a simple recipe:
“As a child, odds are you were
ordered ‘out of the kitchen till
dinner’s ready,’ thus preventing
you from acquiring the many culi
nary secrets passed from mother
to daughter,” it explains.
The tone of much of the book
is tongue-in-cheek — not the cus
tomarily recommended position
for eating. But once the reader
has boiled off the funny stuff,
he’ll discover some genuinely
helpful tips and authentic recipes
that promise to be relatively sim
ple.
The initial step, according to
the guide, is to stock your kitchen
with the necessary basic imple
ments, which are described and
even illustrated to minimize the
guesswork.
To make the special evening a
success, the authors urge the
proper table setting in place of
such haphazard fare as mis
matched plastic utensils, fast-food
paper cups and placemats fash
ioned from the Sunday funnies.
In the book, the authors stress
the important contribution a
clean kitchen makes to the atmo
sphere of the dinner: “Imagine
how she’ll recoil in horror if she
catches you shaking out the
toaster to bread her pork chops
(or) sees that the baking pans on
your shelf are already greased.”
