At issue was an answer Richards, the Demo cratic primary front-runner, gave to a question during the Wednesday night debate. Early in the debate Richards said she would veto a bill that would forbid abortions for girls 16 years of age or younger. “I cannot arrive at any conclusion but that no legislator, no judge and no bureaucrat has any business in determining whether a white woman has an abortion or not,” she appeared to say. After the debate Richards said she didn’t recall exactly what word she used, but added that “white women ... is not a phrase that I use. I think what I said was ‘why women.’ ” Monte Williams, Richards’ campaign press sec retary, said the candidate was saying “whether or why” — not white — in her answer. Neither of her debate opponents — Mattox and former Gov. Mark White — questioned Rich ards about the remark during the debate, nor did any of the panelists who were posing questions to the three candidates. But the subject came up during a news conference after the debate. But Thursday, Mattox said he thinks many Texans were insulted by her comment. “Based on the calls in my campaign office, both by the press and by the public, it’s very evi dent that a great number of people in the state of Texas were offended by her performance,” Mat tox said. “When they let her off the leash, so to speak, and let her deal with the public and to open ques tions, she almost invariably makes a mistake,” he said. Williams said the campaign would respond to Mattox’s criticism later in the day. for the it he teai sin, d t es or tw ig temi the w 'and ate know eii t is a go* ^ aggressitcl nghurt 1 lents haul vargame I rs, Mora'.* ge no out* [, he said. event, am „■ cited aboti ir Gamfi irticipanii. paint is Si guns are 30 people Hall custo i said, i dolls anil pretend to play w it is even not get to got to col- ents gets: lat partid- tames, s “Charlit articipa tde Ti ophomort m Terrel Friday RED CROSS: will be having a blood drive in Rudder from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and in the Commons from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. SADDLE AND SIRLOIN: will have a Valentine’s dance from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at Shiloh Hall.
