Two teams from Bryan-College Station, the Ag gie Bombers A-and B-teams, participated in the event. The Aggie Bombers B-team bombed Brenham’s B-team to win first place in their division, and the Aggie Bombers A-team won second place in the A- division. Mary Velleca, chairman of the local Special Olympics booster club, said this was the first game the B-team ever won. “They were thrilled,” Velleca said. She said they were thrilled also because they were wearing new uniforms, the first new uniforms they’ve had in four years. “They were so excited because they were wear ing new uniforms — they were so proud of them selves,” Velleca said. “We are trying to get them working as a team and looking like a team.” Besides the basketball games, the athletes were treated to a carnival, a dance and movies, which filled in the time between games. “They especially enjoyed the carnival —that’s not something they get to do very often,” Velleca said. The favorite booth seemed to be the booth where they fished for prizes, she said. “This was a time for them to renew friendships with other teams they have played in the past,” Vel leca said. At the closing ceremonies, the teams received trophies and certificates of participation for their ef forts. Velleca said the team members were over joyed to get trophies and certificates. Teams from the Brenham State School and the Conroe Independent School District also partici pated in the tournament, coordinated by the Area Six Special Olympics group. Velleca said the local booster club was formed to provide support for Special Olympics athletes and to promote Special Olympics in Bryan-College Sta tion and the 14 surrounding counties that make up Area Six.
