Pro Bowl just
turning into a
big Pro Hype
Poet's just scrap the Pro
Bowl. Without the football’s top talent,
what good is it?
Like baseball’s All-Star Game, the
Pro Bowl is supposed to be a showcase
for the best players in the game.
Everybody wins. The fans get to see
the league’s best and the players are
honored by their peers by being selected
to play.
It works well for baseball, providing a
mid-season break for the players and
fantasy matchups for the fans. Where
else can you see Mike Scott face Jose
Canseco?
However, the Pro Bowl is a failure in
that regard. At least six of the NFL’s top
athletes — including four of the top
quarterbacks — won’t play in Sunday’s
game: Joe Montana, John Elway, Don
Majkowski, Boomer Esiason, John
Taylor and Karl Mecklenberg.
Why?
After the 55-10 Super-drubbing last
Sunday, AFC players should be hot for
revenge and NFC players should try to
continue their post-season dominance.
But, that’s not the case. In fact,
Esiason stated a month ago that he
wouldn’t play in the Pro Bowl because
of poor blocking. Mecklenberg and
Taylor are injured, Montana and Elway
claim injuries and Majkowski listed
personal reasons.
Hey, can you blame them? Football is
a rough game, much more so than

Phelps added 11 each.
A&M slowly pulled away the rest of the
First half.
After intermission, Texas Tech began
shooting better, improving its Field goal
percentage from 35 percent in the First half
to 45 percent in the second half.
A&M, which shot 50 percent in the First
half, shot just 35 percent in the second half.
Texas Tech Finished with 54 rebounds,
and 37 of those were in the second half.

A&M junior guard Lynn Suber, shown here pulling down a rebound
against Arkansas, scored 19 points Wednesday night as the Aggies
pounded Texas Tech, 101-85 in Lubbock. A&M meets Baylor Saturday.
“A&M came out and hit the buckets
early, and did a good job defensively
against us, to jump out to that big lead
early,” Tech coach Gerald Myers said.
“We had to play catch-up after that, and
we scrambled around and got back into it a
little.”
A&M interim coach John Thornton, who
owns a 2-1 record since Shelby Metcalf left
Jan. 22, said: “The thing that encouraged
me the most was that when things weren’t
going our way in the second half, our guys
pulled together and no one started pointing
fingers.
“Then we came back and made the plays
and put it away.”
Myers said he was disappointed that the
Raiders were flat at the beginning.
“In the second half we got after it a little
better, but we were scrambling from be
hind,” Myers said.
