Sidney L. Loveless’ 14-year-old niece prompted him to create an orga nization that would provide to day’s youth a better tomorrow. Loveless’ niece was shot by a friend who believed her father’s gun was not loaded. You-Tomorrow, a non-profit organization developed in 1957 by Loveless, Class of ’38, began as a gun safety school at Pleasant Acres, located just off Farm Road 2818 close to the A&M Cavalry stables, to prevent accidental deaths. Loveless provides educational opportunities in gun safety, horsemanship and camping to students between 11 and 19 years old 52 weeks a year. Loveless said the purpose of You-Tomorrow is to: • teach riflery, according to the National Rifle Association specifications, stressing safety, marksmanship, sportsmanship and training in democratic prin ciples. • teach equitation on the flat saddle, placing emphasis on the care of the horse. • instill in the youth of today the lessons that can be learned in such activities to be better citizens tomorrow. • prevent juvenile delinquency by providing an outlet for interest in such activities. • provide leadership opportu nities to young people. “You-Tomorrow and the Na tional Rifle Association share in the goal that every individual who should ever handle a firearm be a trained individual, thereby con serving our most valuable re- Col. Loveless, an Army Reserve Colonel, began the riding pro gram in 1959 and the camping school in 1962. All riders are expected to carry out the stable routines which they are taught, he said. All grooming, cleaning of equipment, care of horses, and cleaning of stables and paddocks is performed by members of the school under the guidance of instructors. Loveless said the goal of the camping school is to develop a leader who not only can take care of himself in the outdoors, but who can step forward and help others to fina their way if lost. “We put young people in posi tions of responsibility so they can learn to be leaders if they want to, because you don’t teach lead ership out of a book,” Loveless said. spe Twin City Junior Rifle Club, For rest Trail Riders Pony Club anil Bivouac Lodge, which is a camp ing club. Volunteers at rape crisis center offer support Classes begin Feb. 26 By JILL BUTLER Of The Battalion Staff The Brazos County Rape Crisis Center begins training classes Feb. 26 for those interested in be ing rape crisis center volunteers. Betsy Purcell, coordinator of volunteers for the rape crisis center, said they’ve had the classes about three times a year since 1983. Classes cover the medical, legal and psychological aspects of rape. Class members learn how to work with rape survivors in support groups, to talk openly about rape with survivors and to counsel rape victims who call the rape crisis hot line. Members of the Bryan-College Station com munity and Texas A&M faculty speak to the classes about subjects ranging from sexually transmitted diseases to pornography’s possible connection with rape. People interested in becoming volunteers must apply and be selected to attend the classes. “It takes very special people to volunteer here, because rape is a very sensitive topic,” Purcell said. Interested volunteers must call the rape crisis center for a mailed application. Crisis center em ployees carefully study these applications and check references. Employees interview selected applicants and choose 25 prospective volunteers to attend the classes. The selection process takes about two weeks. Not everyone who completes the classes automat ically becomes a volunteer. A screening commit tee observes students in class before selecting vol unteers. “Volunteers should be able to empathize with rape survivors and be able to discuss this ex tremely sensitive topic comfortably, whiclnsrai hard to do,” Purcell said. Volunteers stay with the victim throughojl medical examinations, take the victim to the p lice station and accompany the victim throught any legal proceedings. “The volunteer’s main purpose is to makes, the victim is treated with dignity and respettl Purcell said. She said the rape crisis center has many voki teers who are A&M students but admits there; problem with some students’ motives. “We want students to volunteer because iltl want to help, not just to benefit themselves wb they move away,” Purcell said.
