Sheriff refuses to stop abortion clinic protesters CORPUS CHRISTI (AP) — Nueces County Sheriff James T. Hickey kept his promise not to stop protesters from blocking abortion clinics — in fact, he joined a picket and refused to help clear the way so patients could enter. “You don’t really need my help, and you know you don’t,” Hickey said. “The fact of the matter is you’re killing babies in there.” Two people were arrested during, the five- hour demonstration. Hickey, who drew praise and protest last week for hanging seven posters in his.department de picting a dismembered fetus, refused a plea by Reproductive Services administrator Rachel Var gas to clear a path so her patients could enter the clinic Saturday. “We’re asking you,” Vargas said during a brief heated exchange with the sheriff. “We’re beg ging you.” On Jan. 15, the sherif f said he “would be aid ing and abetting murder” by stopping protesters from blocking abortion clinics. He dismissed criticism from pro-choice sup porters and law experts who said he was reneg ing on his oath to protect all citizens, saying he had “to really answer to a higher law.” inal trespass.
