A photograph on page 13 of the July-August 1989 issue of Forest Farmer magazine showed Miles at a forestry convention wearing a shirt that said, “Save a logger — eat an owl,” referring to the conflict in Ore gon between- loggers and environ mentalists trying to protect an en dangered species’ habitat. Environmentalists were outraged, and confronted Miles at “One Earth, One Chance,” a conservation pro gram held at the Grove in October. Miles said the concern of the Texas Forest Service is to be rational and willing to compromise between jobs and animals. “The shirt was (given) to me after a presentation,” Miles said. “Cer tainly I’m not promoting devastation of endangered species.” A&M senior psychology major Michelle Chase, an environmental ist, said she realizes there are two sides to every story. “I watched and experienced and talked to so many people who are cutting off success because they couldn’t work with other people,” she said. She said she would like to see an agreement between foresters and those who disagree with how for estry is approached. tal Action Coalition, said politics and economics are connected with water and air pollution and rain forests. She said she wanted as much envi ronmental information as possible. “I wanted to understand all the ramifications,” she said. “I wanted to keep this in mind — not just the rad ical side of environmentalism. Emo tions and organizations don’t go together.” But whatever the differences are among individuals and groups, ev eryone must work together to save the planet, Edwards said. “If we don’t make a chance now, we won’t have a chance,” she said. Strong concern for environmental issues is often long-lasting. Its effects are widespread on personal, com munity and even state and national levels. “I see myself in the future being strongly involved in environmental issues,” Chase said. A psychology major, Chase said she plans to take her patients out doors and use nature as a type of therapy. Everyone needs to realize that tak ing care of the environment is vital to existence, and a tree is as impor tant as an animal, she said. “It’s even more inanimate than that animal,” Chase said. “It needs to be given more than thoughtless abandon.” “I see myself mediating between them because no one else is,” Chase said. A&M student Liz Edwards, co president of the Texas Environmen- Diane Craig, executive coordina tor of Brazos Beautiful Inc., said when someone litters by throwing out a napkin, they feel no guilt be cause it is only one piece of trash. “(But) each person makes a big difference,” she said. “If we all threw them, that’s an awful lot.” JTop-r; No. 4 No wl.Ifi dared me wi Notre defend it fens, No ifflabama No. 3 Mi< Southen | Miami feoloradc atihe.tof Miami lo >, col impio: [Or will In the fnario, :ond b- me wc complain to Notre iboih.
