The researchers found that the shuttle’s characteristic twin sonic booms thumped 400 high-rise build ings in downtown Los Angeles and the nearby Wilshire district when the shuttle Columbia swept to the north east over the city at 2,600 mph be fore landing at Edwards Air Force Base Aug. 13. The early morning booms prompted dozens of alarmed calls to police. The shuttle was returning from a five-day mission to deploy a spy satellite. The thumps against the buildings were transmitted down to the soft sediment of the Los Angeles Basin, triggering seismic waves that reached Caltech instruments 12.5 seconds before the sonic booms were heard there. That’s because waves move more quickly through rock than through air. Buildings 20 to 30 stories tall tend to sway back and forth once every 2 to 3 seconds, making it possible that “in an earthquake, the Los Angeles basin would preferentially amplify ground motion . . . giving 20- to 30- story buildings more shaking than if they were founded on (solid) rock,” Caltech said in a news release. USGS seismologist Jim Mori, a co author of the study, estimated build ings on the sediment would shake three to five times worse than those on solid rock. H owever, that’s less severe i:i the tenfold and greater ampli® tion of shaking during the jn quakes of 1985 in Mexico City, rests on an old lake bed. “While these results certainlvc for close study, I don’t befc there’s any cause for alarm," s Caltech civil engineer jamesL Vietnamese community recovers from homicides PORT ARTHUR (AP) — In the wake of a triple homicide in Port Ar thur’s Vietnamese community in July, residents literally feared for their lives. Since that time, officials with the Port Arthur Police Department’s Asian Task Force have worked around the clock in an attempt to ease the mood among residents in a community they call the “Area of Peace.” The shooting at the Pho Tau Bay Restaurant on July 12 forced em ployees and customers to run for their lives. Three men were killed during the morning hours as they sat at a table eating breakfast in the crowded restaurant, located at 720 Ninth Ave. Some say the nightmare continues to haunt them. Others say they have tried to put the flashbacks to rest. Loan Tran, manager of the res taurant, said business has “drasti cally” declined since the shootinj esc July. “Every now and thenyouit j§ ei see a large crowd in here, butnios it’s nobody,” Tran said. “We« ( 1 making $150 a day before alU happened, and now we’re dowi $70 and $80 a day.” She said the restaurant had about $5,000 since July. Trans the restaurant closed for aboH month after the shooting. “We«’< all just scared,” Tran said. Tm ! scared. My daughter used toed here after school; she don’t come Tran said she does not thinks will help them forget what b pened. Another Vietnamese man did not want his name publish was eating in the restaurant^ time of the shootings. “It was" 1 For a while I thought I was watch a movie,” he said. ac Cl PAYS CASH FOR USED BOOKS!
