They are posted in the locker rooms of teams looking forward to their next game against you. In this case, it’s the San Fran cisco 49ers, the Giants’ opponent on Monday night in a game matching division leaders with 9- 2 records, best in the NFC. A Jan uary rematch to decide the con ference championship and a Su per Bowl berth is a strong possibility, and the outcome of this regular-season meeting could determine which team gets the home Field advantage. There have been four Giants- 49ers playoff games in the 1980s, with the home team winning each time. The Giants’ hopes of reaching the playoffs last year died on the final Sunday of the season when the Los Angeles Rams claimed the last available NFC wild-card spot with a 38-16 victory over the 49ers. A disconsolate Simms was 3 noted as saying the 49ers “lay own like dogs” against Los An geles. He’s sure to have jeering fans, reminding him of his 11-month- old comment, as well as the 49ers’ defense to contend with Monday night at sold-out Candlestick Park. “He screwed Up and he blamed it on us,” San Francisco center Jesse Sapolu says. “He’s a cry baby. I have no respect for him. We may have laid down like dogs but, baby, we got up!” The 49ers, who were assured of the NFC West title before their final game, went on to win their third NFL title under coach Bill Walsh, who retired soon after the Super Bowl. New head coach George Sei fert, who was Walsh’s defensive coordinator, has the league’s top- ranked offense, one led by pass ing leader Joe Montana and re ceiving star Jerry Rice. Montana, the two-time Super Bowl MVP, went over the 30,000-yard mark for his career last week and is having a super season, with 19 touchdown passes and only four interceptions. Rice, last January’s Super Bowl MVP, has 14 touch downs and 1,149 yards on his 1989 catches and receiving totals of 63 TDs and 6,030 yards in his five pro seasons. help, by beating the New Yor Jets a few hours before theRa® 49ers game. The Jets upset them Walsh, now the rookie NF television commentator, said cently of Simms’ “dog” commet “I’m sure he’s been reminded everyone that to assure youne of a championship, you have win games. You can’t exi someone else to win it for you.' Giants coach Bill Parcells thinking only of Monday ni[ game and believes that oldquoii “don’t have anything to do tv the outcome.” P ’ The Giants have not played a postseason game since their 1986 Super Bowl championship sea son. They could have reached the 1988 playoffs, without requiring Simms, working behind young offensive line this year,I not had a 300-yard passing gar yet, with his top output being2 in the season opener. Hispassii statistics include 10 touchdow and nine interceptions. sponsored by /jlL McDonald’s M m H * Breakfast Every Morning • 5 locations • Drive Thru Mickey D's Arcade™ Now open at the Univ.
