Archaelogists ask government
to protect Indian rock art sites
EL PASO (AP) — Two archaeolo
gists have discovered four area sites
abundant with well-preserved an
cient Indian rock art and are asking
federal officials that they be desig
nated as national monuments.
Gerald X. Fitzgerald and Alex
Apostolides hope the designation
will save the art from vandalism and
ensure their preservation. Some of
the art is located at a Fort Hancock
site where the government is consid
ering building a low-level nuclear
dump.
The petroglyphs, or rock carv
ings, and pictographs, or rock paint
ings, are estimated to range from
3,000 to 6,000 years old.
The archaeologists found the art
in the Alamo Canyon near Fort
Hancock, about 50 miles southeast
of El Paso; Coranudas Peak near El
Paso; Alamo Mountain in southern
New Mexico; and in Three Rivers,
about 30 miles north of Alamo
gordo, N.M.
The four sites are tied together by

Kay Sutherland,

the same art styles, Apostolides said.
Together, they contain more than
30,000 carvings and paintings.
“I call them ancient art galleries,”
said Apostolides, curator of the!
Paso Wilderness Park Museum.
Kay Sutherland, an Austin an I
thropologist who helped discow|
many of the carvings and paint inf I
at the sites, said they are uniquebtl
cause the art is so well-preserved ail
not vandalized, unlike rock-art siiel
in California.

the largest single concentration oil

States, and Three Rivers contain|
hundreds of carvings of masbl
which are not commonly found,Sul
therland said. The masks represeml
gods, she said.
“The artistic quality of the petrojfl
lyphs and pictographs rivals pattemf;
and motifs of bowls, blankets ai«l
masks that are in national nt
seurns,” Sutherland said.
