Winless season has
Cowboys fans booing
409/846-5332
IRVING (AP) — The fans are be
ginning to desert the winless Dallas
Cowboys. The ones who do come are
getting mad.
The 44,431 fans at Sunday’s 19-10
loss to the Phoenix Cardinals booed
both quarterback Steve Walsh and
owner Jerry Jones.
Walsh was intercepted twice, and
one errant throw was returned 16
yards for a touchdown by Michael
Zordich.
Jones got the razzberry treament
as he introduced Lee Roy Jordan
into the Ring of Honor.
“When you’re not in the win col
umn, you know the boobirds are
going to get going,” Jones said.
There were 2,461 no-shows from
fans who bought tickets to the Cow
boys’ eighth consecutive loss.
With Cowboys tickets selling at
$25 each, Jones had about $500,000
worth of empty seats Sunday.
Some fans were miffed because
Jones didn’t invite Landry to the
Ring of Honor ceremony.
One fan wore a sack over his head
that read: “Gee, I miss Tom
Landry.”
Landry, who was fired in Feb
ruary when Jones installed Jimmy
Johnson as the coach, said on Mon
day he wasn’t invited to the cere
mony although he coached Jordan
to three Super Bowls.
“No one contacted me,” Landry
said. “I guess they are in an awkward
position when it comes to me.”
Landry has yet to attend a Cow
boys game this season but keeps up
with them.
“I guess all of us who are inter
ested in the club are disappointed,”
he said.
Fans booed rookie Walsh and be
gan a “We Want Babe” chant in the
fourth period.
They were referring to backup
quarterback Babe Laufenberg, who
hasn’t played yet this season.
Dallas may have Troy Aikman, in
the lineup for Sunday night’s game
in Washington against the Redskins.

line. The other three linebackers are
first-year starters, including a sopho
more and a converted safety.
The defense’s inexperience was a
major concern for A&M Coach R.C.
Slocum, who recruited Wallace in
high school, at the start of the sea
son.
“Our defense, with all the ques
tion marks, has really turned out to
be effective,” Slocum said last week.
“It wouldn’t have surprised me if we
had a lot more problems this year on
defense.”
That success is due largely in part
to Wallace, who is tied for fourth in
team tackles and is tied for first in
sacks.
It seemed unlikely that a quit;
player like Wallace would breai
A&M’s sack record. He always**
the quiet linebacker, playing in tit
shadows of noisier players lil f
Roper and inside linebacker Dan;
Batiste.
But Wallace, nicknamed “Hit
Quiet Avenger,” moved past then
all virtually unnoticed. Upperdasv
men would complain duringhisfirs
two years that he would make In
sacks only after someone elsedida!
the work — another player would
flush the quarterback out and Wal
lace would be there to finish tit
sack.
However, coaches always ban
been impressed by his work eihn
and Wallace earned the sacks It
made. It’s been a long road to there
cord, but Wallace finally got it.
He’s not through yet.
