THE BATT

DAILY
Monday
through Friday
HOUSTON (AP) — A day after
Coach Jerry Glanville was bitten by a
poisonous snake, the Houston Oilers
gave Pittsburgh a taste of their own
kind of venom.
Warren Moon threw three touch
down passes in the First half, two to
Alonzo Highsmith, and Houston’s
defense held Pittsburgh to 132 total
yards en route to a 27-0 victory Sun
day and the Oilers’ first shutout
since 1980.
The win, coupled with Cincin
nati’s 23-12 loss to Indianapolis,
gave Houston (4-3) a tie with the
Bengals for the AFC Central Divi
sion lead.
“We played well and made turn
overs happen,” said rookie safety
Bubba McDowell, who intercepted
two passes. “Coach Glanville told me
on Monday that I couldn’t make any
more rookie mistakes.”
Glanville was bitten on his right
foot by a poisonous water moccasin
on Saturday and underwent treat
ment at a hospital. The coach
showed up at the Astrodome on
crutches, but discarded them when
he came onto the field.
Glanville and Noll, who have
feuded since 1987, once again did
not shake hands following the game.
“I thought Chuck was in my
neighborhood yesterday but I guess
not. We’ll talk about that later, let’s
enjoy the team win,” Glanville said.
The Steelers, ranked third in the
NFL in possession time, wanted to
run Tim Worley and keep the ball
away from Houston’s explosive of
fense.
“They got penetration and he
(Worley) didn’t have a chance,” Noll
said. “They played exceptionally
well against us defensively both
against the run and the pass.
“Reality was that we didn’t mat
the plays and they did.”
The Oilers’ last shutout came«;
Dec. 20, 1980, when they beat fe
burgh 6-0. The Steelers (3-4) b;
won t hree of their last four.
Quarterback Todd Blackledgs
replacing injured Bubby Brister,d ;
able to guide the Steelers to just5:
first-half yards, and Pittsburgh b:
only 42 at the start of the founi
quarter.
“They came out and stung us pit
tty good,” Blackledge said. “W
couldn’t move the football. Th

“Our game plan wasn’t exotic I
Glanville said. “We wanted to kee:
getting after them. It was fun t:
watch it. Any time you getashutot:
and you run the ball and thron it
you’ve got to be happy.”
The Oilers scored on four of the:
five first half possessions and tooltiI
24-0 halftime lead.
Moon’s three first half touchdowi
passes went to Highsmith for3and:I

Cowboys lose 36-28, drop to 0-7
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A
team record 33 carries, and Chris
tian Okoye is still looking to hit his
stride. What about 40?
“I did it in college,” the big Kansas
City fullback said.
Horst gained 170 yards and scor
ing twice against the NFL’s worst
rushing defense as the Chiefs beat
Dallas 36-28 Sunday and handed the
Cowboys their seventh straight loss.
“I don’t think I’m in peak form,”
said Okoye. “I’m still learning. No
body can stop learning the game of
football.”
The Chiefs, 3-4, make no attempt
to disguise the fact that Okoye is
going to get the ball, but it doesn’t
seem to matter to the AFC’s leading
rusher at 709 yards.
“I come back to the huddle and I
look at the guys and I can tell they’re
all fired up,” Okoye said.
The Chiefs scored four touch
downs on the ground in a game for
the first time since Dec. 12, 1976 and
gained 202 yards rushing, their most
since Oct. 10, 1984.
The Chiefs took a 27-14 lead at
halftime and went up 36-14 before
the Cowboys tacked on two belated
touchdowns in the fourth period.
“Defensively, we didn’t play with
the emotion of last week — we didn’t
play well, especially against a big guy
like Okoye,” said linebacker Eugene
Lockhart. “We got some good hits
on him and he was hurting a little
bit, but we didn’t hit him enough.
“We knew exactly what he was
going to do. They did just what we
practiced for, we just couldn’t stop
them.”
The Cowboys hurt themselves
with penalties and struggled on of
fense most of the game until putting
together two long scoring drives in
the fourth quarter that left them
with their most points in a game
since Dec. 21, 1987.
“We made too many mistakes,”
Coach Jimmy Johnson said. “We had
a chance to win, but we’ve got so
many new people. We were scram
bling most of the game. Out of 47
guys, I guess 24 are new.”
Okoye scored on touchdown mci
of 2 and 13 runs in the first quant:
but Paul Palmer answered withafij
yard run for Dallas. Palmer is a for
mer first-round draft choice of Kac |
sas City signed this week by Dallas.
“I was taunting the (Kansas Cbj
coaching staff a little bit,” he:
“My fiancee’ said, ‘Now, they'll In;-1
what it’s like to hold their breathci |
ery time you carry the ball.’ I f<
that today. It felt good to get tin:I
touchdown against the Chiefs dtl
fense because they’re exception:'
against the run.”
Former Cowboys quarterWl
Steve Pelluer, acquired earlier i
week by the Chiefs, also plaj
against his former team and scortiij
on a 5-yard run that gave Kansal
City a 36-14 lead with 2:21 leftintk|
third quarter.
“It was fun to be able to score
Pelluer said. “Playing against n
team, I think gave me mixed emi
tions.
Aggies
(Continued from page 9)
to allow Baylor into the endzone.
The Bears had to settle for three
field goals, and were turned back
three times after penetrating the Ag
gies’ 15-yard line.
A&M linebacker William Thomas
combined with safeties Gary Jones
and Larry Horton to record 30
tackles. Conerback Mickey Washing
ton harassed Baylor quarterback
Brad Goebel, sacking him twice.
The difference in the game
though, was decided by Teaff and
the officials.
Late in the third quarter, Baylor
had driven to the A&M three-yard
line. After failing to get into the end-
zone, Teaff decided to go for the
touchdown on fourth and goal with
the Bears on top, 8-0.
But the Aggies’ defense turned
Baylor away. Thomas and Jones hit
running back Lincoln Coleman in
the Baylor backfield for a two-yard
loss.
“If I had to do it all over again, I
would have kicked a field goal,”
Teaff said. “I felt like we needed
more points, so that’s why I did what
I did.”
It was the official’s call that led to
A&M’s first touchdown, though.
After shutting down the A&M’s
defense, Baylor failed to convert on
a third down and Rutter booted an
80-yard punt.
But Baylor was called for clipping,
and Slocum decided to let the Bears
kick it again.
“If we took the penalty and fum
bled the return, it wouldn’t have
been such a great call,” Slocum said.
Instead, Rutter fumbled the snap

After an insurance field goalitl
the fourth quarter, Baylor seemed! I

But Pavlas, who had a miserall

passes for 55 yards and throwil
two interceptions — came throupl
with the big 34-yard gain on f

“I thought it could’ve beenthetej

Five plays later, Pavlas gave tin!
Aggies six more points. After i

However, the Bears werenf
through yet.
After returning the kickoff t
their own 49, Baylor completed oisj
pass for six yards before stalling.
Teaff sent kicker Jeff Ireland!
to attempt a 60-yard field goal, ftl
had a 20-mile per hour wind at i
back.
“Before the game, I saw (Ireland
kicking some 50-yarders,” Slo
said. “As the ball headed towardil
goalpost, I was saying a fH

A&M cornerback Kevin Sm
thought the Bears might be up!
something tricky, though.
“They had their quarterbaj
(Goebel) in there, so I thought it " J
going to be a fake,” Smith said. “(I
land) almost made it.”
Almost, but not quite.
The kick had the distance. 1
flew wide at the last moment!
missed the crossbar by two feet.
The win keeps the Aggies inc
tention for the SWC champions!''!
and a Cotton Bowl appearance.
Slocum and Teaff both said t
the conference race is so tight!

“I really like A&M’s chancf j
