Other students said they were not informed on the expansion, and felt it was unfair students’ views were not taken into account. Hodge said the committee that studied the expanding needs of the University Center was formed in Oc tober 1984, and in November 1986 serious planning on the project be gan. Details on the design have been ironed out since November 1988. “The project has been discussed with four student body presidents, student government members and MSC council members,” Hodge said. They were aware of all the aspects of the project. We can’t do anything if that information was not passed on.” Many students said they were not aware of the expansion plans, espe cially plans concerning the movement and cutting of the oaks, until about six months ago. The discussion then shifted to talk of a referendum. A member of stu dent government said if students were serious about a referendum, they need to stop by the student gov ernment office and find out the cor rect procedure. A woman asked that if enough students objected to the expansion plans, could the plans be changed? Hodge said that was a difficult question to answer. “The approval (of such a project) comes from the Board of Regents,” he said. “So I don’t know. I’m not here to tell you that what you’re doing is wrong,” he said. “If you’re going to object, at least do it based on the facts. If you’re going to say we shouldn’t cut down four trees, then that’s fine. That’s your right to do that. My only concern is that you don’t say we’re cutting down 26 live oaks.” Hodge also said he was not at tempting to defend the cutting down of the live oaks, nor did he represent the views of members of the Board of Regents. “I just want to make sure every body understands the current status of the project.” In an emotional appeal, one stu dent said she thought the “A” in Texas A&M stood for agriculture, and “not for administration.” She said the views of the students should be considered. Hodge said the expansion in cludes an expanded bowling and games area, a food court, larger vo cal music facilities, art galleries and gallery storage, a larger bookstore, an expanded student programs of fice and a new browsing library. The expansion of the Rudder Theater Complex includes an out door stage, and a 500-seat lecture hall and movie theater. A parking garage and an “L”- shaped building will be constructed near the aerobic jogging trail and Mount Aggie. The “L”-shaped struc ture, called the Lot 60 Building for now, will contain student activities offices currently located in the Pavil ion. The building also will contain student government offices, the multicultural services office, KANM studio, student senate’s meeting room, off-campus center offices, the parking and transit department, the athletic department, the placement center, the cooperative education of fice and the school relations office. Building construction should be completed by October or November of 1991 and the parking garage should be finished by September 1991. “The (Dad part of this is that most of you won’t be able to see the re sults,” Hodge told the audience. “You’re just going to live through the construction.” He said that with the expansion, the Rudder Fountain area will be closed for two years and Ring Dance will have to be different this year. He could not elaborate on new plans for Ring Dance. Speed Reading!
