Drilling companies
foretell of shortage
of Texas roughnecks
MIDLAND (AP) — A shortage of
qualified, experienced roughnecks
in the oilfield has prevented some
Permian Basin drilling companies
from operating at capacity. And the
shortage will not let up until there is
sustained, increased drilling activity.
“I can see it coming,” Ray Peter
son said of a critical shortage of qual
ified roughnecks. “I know the Per
mian Basin, or the United States for
that matter, could not sustain much
increased activity without experienc
ing a serious shortage.”
Peterson of Peterson Drilling Co.,
is president of the local chapter of
the International Association of
Drilling Contractors. His firm has
not “turned down work” because of
the perceived shortage, but Peterson
knows it’s inevitable.
“We’ve (the oil industry) starved
them out and they left the area,” he
said. “And it’s hard to attract them
back.”
Gene Grimes with Grace Drilling
noticed a tightening of the supply of
roughnecks about one month ago.
He said the shortage is not critical
yet, but admitted his company could
be working one or two more rigs if it
could recruit qualified roughnecks.
Cactus Drilling Co., has 22 rigs to
operate, but is working only nine
now, partially because of the short
age of qualified roughnecks, accorc |
ing to Mac McGee.
“There is a lack of qualified pec I
pie right now,” he said. “Therejus'
aren’t any roughnecks out there,
they didn’t stay in the oil business
they’re out of the country.”
And the individuals who have re I
mained with the oil business are ir |
well servicing, he said.
“It began in 1988, but this is tl# I
worst year in history for the dr "
industry,” he said.”
I here is a lack of
qualified people right now
There just aren’t any
roughnecks out there. ”
— Mac McGee
Cactus Drilling Co
McGee said drillers tend toliiE
the number of rigs they startup 1
the fourth quarter. And for that its
son, he doesn’t want to hire addit*'
nal crews just for a tempor/
amount of time.
“You can’t hire people just fo
fourth quarter and when it goes
to low activity levels expect to
experienced help.”
