Flashback
The following information was
gathered from past issues of The
Battalion and reflects activities that
occurred during this week in A&M’s
history.
10 years ago — Two Ford Pintos
were added to the University Police
Department. The Pintos were leased
to replace the two scooters that UPD
officers had used in the past. The
economy cars were added because of
their better maneuverability and
their ability to get better gas mileage
than the other three UPD cars, a
Chevrolet Impala and two Ford
LTDs.
25 years ago — Twenty-seven young
women from Texas Women’s Col
lege were selected to compete as
semi-finalists in the 1964-1965 Ag
gie Sweetheart competition.
50 years ago — About 6,000 scream
ing cadets rallied around the A&M
football team as the players boarded
a train to the West Coast to meet the
Santa Clara Broncos.
Indigo Girls at A&M Saturday
Bohemes unite — grab your
beads and let down your hair for
Saturday night’s appearance by
Indigo Girls.
The Atlanta-based duo of Amy
Ray and Emily Saliers will be per
forming in Deware Fieldhouse at
8 p.m. as a presentation of MSC
Town Hall. The opening act has
not been announced.
General admission tickets are
$5 at the MSC Box Office and
Dillard’s. They will also be sold at
the door.
After an EP and an LP on their
own Indigo label, Ray and Saliers
signed with Epic Records this
year and released their self-titled
album.
Indigo Girls: Amy Ray and Emily Saliers
Enlisting the aid of members
from REM and Hothouse Flow
ers, Indigo Girls successfully ma
nipulated their diverse visions
and influences into a compelling
mix of intimacy, spirituality and
classic folk. The result has been a
hot album, the hit single “Closer
To Fine” and a warmly received
tour that has somehow found its
way to College Station.
Saturday’s show should be a
genuine highlight in an otherwise
slow semester of live music.
75 years ago An article in The Bat
talion stated that the days of hazing
in the Corps of Cadets were believed
to be coming to an end. Some upper
classmen held the opinion that
freshmen were rarely hazed. But the
article also stated that A&M was still
laboring under the weight of a repu
tation for “rowdyism” among the ca
dets.
Dylan
(Continued from page 6)
Wanted”, is that Dylan’s voice finally
matches the conviction of his lyrics, a
quality abscent in his more recent
work.
Say you want it for free/ What was it
you wanted/ Are you talking to me?”
The real pleasure of both “Most of
the Time” and “What Was It You
But, overall, Dylan doesn’t live up
to the quality of Lanois’ production.
His voice is shot from years of exces
siveness, and his lyrics have been re
duced to weak regurgitations of reli
gious allegory, political ambiguiiv.
and personal vendetta.
Lanois does his best to resurrect
Dylan’s conviction, and he succeeds
in strengthening his voice and sur
rounding him with some first-class
session men. But even so, Oh Mem
fails where it should have succeed
the most, and that’s bad news for
Mr. Zimmerman.
