He could never seem to throw for more than five touchdowns in a game. Finally, Ware broke through the barrier Saturday with a Southwest Conference record seven touch down passes in an offensive explo sion that led to a 65-7 victory over winless Temple. “I could never get over the hump,” Ware said. “You don’t think about it. I wasn’t aware I had that many.” Ware and the run-and-shoot Cou gars offense have been expanding the possibilities of the offense this season. The 14th-ranked Cougars have outscored three opponents 170-14 going into Saturday’s game against Baylor, which owns the nation’s top- ranked pass defense. Their early success has the Cou gars’ confidence soaring. “There’s not a player in this room who wouldn’t want a shot at Notre Dame,” Ware said. “I would love it. See if you could schedule a scrim mage with them.” Ware threw five touchdown passes in the first half against the Temple (0-5) and retired for good after completing 30 of 45 passes for 413 yards in less than three quarters. Ware has completed 102 of 162 passes for 1,306 yards, 14 touch downs and five interceptions. Four of his interceptions were against Ari zona State. He didn’t yield an interception against Temple, which amazed Owls coach Jerry Berndt. “It is incredible that they can throw so many passes without get ting any interceptions,” Berndt said. “This is a credit to Ware and a credit to their big offensive linemen. We just couldn’t put enough pressure on them.” The Cougars offense was even more offensive in a 36-7 victory over Arizona State on Sept. 23. Ware completed 40 of 68 passes for 497 yards, breaking his own SWC records for yards and comple tions. Manny Hazard, who caught 16 E asses last week to take the national ;ad in receptions, caught 12 more against Temple for 193 yards and three touchdowns. “Manny’s improving so fast it’s scary,” Ware said of the junior col lege transfer. Tracy Good caught 10 passes against Temple and gives credit to Ware for making the offense sing. “Andre is always hot,” Good said. “I’ve never played with a quar terback that is always high, most of them get down from time to time. Not Andre.” Houston amassed only 613 yards and 32 first downs against Temple. The Cougars amasses a league re cord 744 total yards against Arizona State. The Cougars beat Nevada-Uas Vegars 69-0 in their season opener. “There’s no telling what kind of numbers this team could put up,” Ware said. “There’s nobody in the country who can stop us if we don’t stop ourselves.” Ryan will return and seek 300 wins ARUINGTON (AP) —- Nolan Ryan, the 42-year-old Texas Rang ers’ right-hander who amazed the baseball world again in 1989 with his unmatched strikeout pitching, said Monday he will gun for 300 victories next year and “be disappointed” if he doesn’t get them. Ryan is 11 victories short of the 300 victory plateau, considered an automatic ticket to baseball’s Hall of Fame. He had 16 victories this year, his 21st major league season and first with Texas. “I should get 300 if I stay healthy and pitch all season,” said Ryan, who was clocked by a radar gun at 99 miles an hour in one game this sea son. On Saturday, Ryan recorded his 301st strikeout for the year in a three-hit, 2-0 victory over California. He became the oldest pitcher by 11 years to fan 300 in a season. He led the majors in strikeouts with 66 more than runner-up Mark Uan- gston. “It turned out to be, if not the most enjoyable season, certainly one that would rate right up there with the top couple of seasons,” Ryan said. “The Rangers treated my fam ily great. They are kid-oriented. In my last several seasons in Houston, my kids wouldn’t even go to the As trodome.” Ryans’ two boys traveled on road trips with the Rangers. He also has a daughter. His wife, Ruth, went on some trips and Ryan said “if it had been up to her she would have been on the field hitting and shagging balls, too.” Ryan’s biggest milestone came on Aug. 22 when he struck out his 5,000th batter. “My return hinged on how I fared physically and how my family en joyed it,” Ryan said. “Going in I had programmed that it was my last year. I thought along those lines until the last six weeks. “The Rangers worked with my kids and that meant a lot to me,” Ryan said. “That wasn’t the attitude in Houston.” Ryan, who will make $1.4 million on his 1990 contract, signed with the Rangers after Houston let him be come a free agent. The Rangers have offered an op tion for the 1991 season but he said “I haven’t even thought that far ahead.” Asked if he would like to go for 6,000 strikeouts, Ryan deadpanned, “Yeah, I’ll probably get that in slow- pitch softball some day.” Ryan had a 3.20 ERA in 32 starts and allowed the opposition a batting average of only .187. n "o /» "ii #»' n "i) n "ii n ”n /» "o n ”<» n" ti *’o ii "<> iil "o ii’ ’n Sport Shop Hunting • Fishing • Archery • Clothing EMIL BROZ it it it it « it it ir\ it 712 Villa Maria Bryan, Texas 77802 (Bus) 409/822-2374 (Home) 409/268-4221 If it Authorized Dealer for Bear, Hoyt-Easton, Jennings, Martin, and PSE Bows 3rd Anniversary Sale tf Archery - Bow Season Begins Oct. 7 Hoyt Easton ProVantage Hunter Bow PSE Fire Flite Bow PSE Polaris Bow Martin Tiger Bow Martin Lynx Magnum $299.00 225.00 135.00 79.95 122.00 Several Bow Combos with sights, quiver, silencers from Terminator Broadheads - 6 pack Skunk Screen Scent Eliminator Sure Hands Camo Gloves -100% Cotton - CJ Sorel Boots - Rubber Bottom - Leather Top Rocky Boots - Gore Tex - Thinsulate 99.95 19.95 4.95 6.50 2.50 59.00 99.95 n ti ”<) ii 'ii ii a ii ”ii ti' 'ii ii "ii n ”n Guns & Ammo Savage 110D Combo - 3x9 Scope Weatherby Fiberguard Browning Citori -12 or 20 ga.
